Imitation of Jesus Christ - Every Trial Must Be Borne for the Sake of Eternal Life  Every Trial Must Be Borne for the Sake of Eternal Life

THE VOICE OF CHRIST
MY CHILD, do not let the labors which you have taken up for My sake break you, and do not let troubles, from whatever source, cast you down; but in everything let My promise strengthen and console you. I am able to reward you beyond all means and measure.
You will not labor here long, nor will you always be oppressed by sorrows. Wait a little while and you will see a speedy end of evils. The hour will come when all labor and trouble shall be no more. All that passes away with time is trivial.
What you do, do well. Work faithfully in My vineyard. I will be your reward. Write, read, sing, mourn, keep silence, pray, and bear hardships like a man. Eternal life is worth all these and greater battles. Peace will come on a day which is known to the Lord, and then there shall be no day or night as at present but perpetual light, infinite brightness, lasting peace, and safe repose. Then you will not say: "Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" nor will you cry: "Woe is me, because my sojourn is prolonged." For then death will be banished, and there will be health unfailing. There will be no anxiety then, but blessed joy and sweet, noble companionship.
If you could see the everlasting crowns of the saints in heaven, and the great glory wherein they now rejoice -- they who were once considered contemptible in this world and, as it were, unworthy of life itself -- you would certainly humble yourself at once to the very earth, and seek to be subject to all rather than to command even one. Nor would you desire the pleasant days of this life, but rather be glad to suffer for God, considering it your greatest gain to be counted as nothing among men.
Oh, if these things appealed to you and penetrated deeply into your heart, how could you dare to complain even once? Ought not all trials be borne for the sake of everlasting life? In truth, the loss or gain of God's kingdom is no small matter.
Lift up your countenance to heaven, then. Behold Me, and with Me all My saints. They had great trials in this life, but now they rejoice. They are consoled. Now they are safe and at rest. And they shall abide with Me for all eternity in the kingdom of My Father.

Imitation of Christ Devotional Ping!

Please notify me via FReepmail if you would like to be added to or taken off the Imitation of Christ Devotional Ping List.

Also, many Protestants have asked me to put them on this ping list. I have gladly done so, and will add your name if you FReepmail me. I reassure you that you will not get all the Catholic pings.

The Religion Moderator gave me permission to copy the rules from the Chambers' thread (with a few alterations) which I think are applicable. Thank you to the RM!

Come to these threads as you are; leave with what you have discovered.

Absolutely no flaming! These daily threads are intended to be devotional in nature. If a particular day's offering says nothing to you, please just go on and wait for the next day. Consider these threads a DMZ of sorts, a place where a perpetual truce is in effect and a place where all other arguments and disagreements from other times and places are left behind.

I can attest from personal experience (Salvation's)  that reading from Imitation of Christ daily will almost certainly change - not one's faith - but one's perspective of his/her own faith, and open up new vistas in your spiritual life. If - when - this happens to a reader of these threads, and they choose to share what has happened within them - we are treading on hallowed ground. Be respectful.

The everyday trials can be overwhelming at times, can’t they?

As our priest said tonight, perhaps those trials are there for a reason.......he was asking us to take something un-needed out of our lives during Advent. He has turned off his TV until the 26th.

I was thinking about taking shopping out of my life. LOL!

Feeling the same way. Trials overcome are sweeter than those met with failure. Yet failing a trial is yet another trial. Do you let your cross lay on the ground and declare yourself exhausted and beyond hope . . . or do you take up the cross again, and again, and yet again?

I did most of my shopping online this year. It was kind of a fun challenge trying to find places with free shipping and attempting to locate coupon codes for every purchase. I have not been in the mood to take all 4 of these kids to the shopping mall. It’s been so much more pleasant to have everything delivered to the door! Now, if I’d only had the money to pay to have them gift wrapped!! ;o)

You take up the cross...after declaring yourself exhausted an beyond hope! I do this all the time. :o) I’m waiting to see what good could possibly come from out latest trial. What lesson are we supposed to have learned? It could be that we were no more than tools for someone else’s lesson. We’ll have to wait this one out a bit and see what happens. That cross can get awfully heavy!

I do think in the long run, people will come back to these postings again and again. However, they can be purchased in a little book that fits in a purse or briefcase.
