Higher Calling: A woman is ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood (Newsweek)
Newsweek ^ | Sept. 13, 2007 | Karen Springen

Posted on 09/13/2007 12:41:59 PM PDT by presidio9

Last week 25-year-old Jessica Rowley became one of about a dozen women nationwide to make a highly unusual career move: she was ordained a Catholic priest. Rowley’s ordination—which took place at Eden Theological Seminary, a progressive institution in Webster Groves, Mo.—is approved by the Ecumenical Catholic Communion, a group of churches that decline to recognize the authority of the pope but see themselves nevertheless as Roman Catholic. This week Rowley—who is also married—begins working full-time as an associate pastor at Saints Clare & Francis, a breakaway parish in Webster Groves.

The Roman Catholic Church, not surprisingly, does not recognize Rowley as a priest. “The Church does not see itself able to ordain women, following the long and constant teaching of the church,” says Sister Mary Ann Walsh, a spokeswoman for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. (It does, however, recognize the more than 100 already married men who became priests after a conversion to Roman Catholicism.) NEWSWEEK’s Karen Springen talked with Rowley about how she views her role. Excerpts:

NEWSWEEK: What made you decide to become a Catholic priest? Jessica Rowley: It was a long process that started at a very young age. I [grew up Roman Catholic and] was always attracted to the church and to things spiritual. I was always affirmed by my youth minister that I had gifts for ministry.

Your husband, who is Protestant, helped you realize that you wanted to be a priest. Tell me about that. I began going to church with him, and he began going to mass with me. At his church there were female pastors. He’s a member of the United Church of Christ. It’s a progressive, mainline Protestant denomination. They ordain women, and they’re open to gays and lesbians in

They can also see themselves as a collection of reincarnations of the Queen of Sheba while they're at it, it just doesn't make it so.

I could be mistaken, but real Church doesn't allow for 25 year old MALE priests - at least in the US. You need to have your degree and then spend a lot of time at Seminary. Am I mistaken?

Jeez - I'd be damned before I gave a 25 year old of either sex the time of day if they told me they were a priest. Listening to their homilies must be the psychological equivilent of shooting a nail gun into your skull.

Old Abraham Lincoln story:

"Ma'am, if you call a dog's tail a leg, then how many legs does a dog have?"
"Why, I suppose it would have 5 legs, Mr. Lincoln."
"No, Ma'am. Calling the tail a leg, doesn't make it a leg."

So she’s a “priestess,” right?

The Roman Catholic Church, not surprisingly, does not recognize Rowley as a priest.

Then, ipso facto, she is not, as Newsweak claims, "A woman ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood."

They are describing an organization that is separate from the Catholic Church. So how is this newsworthy?

It ain't called NEWSWEAK for nothing. Not even bothering to attempt to camouflage their misrepresentations anymore.

They “decline to recognize the authority of the pope but see themselves nevertheless as Roman Catholic.”

Oops, do not pass go, do not collect $200. They can see themselves as whatever they want, but self-delusion does not mean that whatever priest they ordain is in fact a Roman Catholic priest. Heck, by these standards my dog could “ordain” a priest.

The bigger question is why Newsweek would run such tripe.

Clearly Newsweek would like to have that authority, but somehow I think the Pope has more say in this situation.

So how is this newsworthy?

Because if you repeat a lie long enough and loud enough, people will believe it. I'm expecting them to start suggesting that these loons really are the true Roman Church and that guy in Rome is some sort of usurper.

I just declared myself Ron Paul, but the mainstream media, including Newsweek, rejected my claim. They said that while I was showing an impressively delusional personality type, I was still way too far in touch with reality to convincingly pull off the Congressman.

If you can become a Catholic priest even if the Catholic Church says no, then I want to be a priest.

I’m not Catholic. I’m married. I have kids. But I’ve always wanted to wear a purple robe.

Abracadabra! I’m a priest!

Anybody want to get married? I’ll do it for $25.

Homosexuality is not inherently sinful. Love in all of its forms can be for the glory of God.
