Western Michigan Episcopal Cathedral’s fate could be decided soon

Bishop Robert Gepert of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan says the fate of the Cathedral of Christ the King in Portage might be decided at a meeting of church officials in March.

On March 10, the Executive Council of the diocese will review and possibly act on a feasibility study that has found West Michigan Episcopalians unwilling to support a $3.5 million capital campaign to keep the cathedral from closing its doors.

“It is sad we have reached a point financially where we are not able to support the building and the property there,'’ Gepert said Monday after receiving results of the feasibility study commissioned by the Cathedral Planning Committee.

For the study, an outside group was hired to interview Episcopalians across the diocese to see if they would be willing to help cover the cost of keeping the cathedral open. A majority said that other financial concerns, including supporting their own parishes, were more important than helping the cathedral overcome an ongoing deficit.

That's the one that gave rise to the ugly church thread a few weeks ago. I can see why they are having problems raising money for it.

Looks like the White Witch's Castle in the Narnia books.

Or a particularly grim Victorian prison.

I wouldn't pay a dime, either.

I've figured out how they can raise money. They could sue the architect for designing such an ugly building.

Yeah, but who would buy that thing? Talk about a white elephant . . .

It looks like a public school, to me. Maybe a private school would buy the building, or a charter could rent it.
