A group of Christian lawyers plan to ask Britain's Queen Elizabeth to intervene in the introduction of new gay rights laws.
The Christian Concern for Our Nation are to petition the queen, as head of the Church of England, asking her to state their case that the proposed Sexual Orientation Regulations discriminate against Christians to Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The laws, which are scheduled to come into force in April, are being introduced to attempt to prevent discrimination against homosexual people.
However, the Church of England has indicated that priests could be sued for refusing to bless same-sex civil partnerships under the new regulations.
The queen does not have the power to stop the laws being introduced but could raise the concerns during her regular meetings with Tony Blair.
The Christian Concern for Our Nation is a branch of the Lawyers' Christian Fellowship and boasts 2,000 barristers and solicitors as members.
Their petition warns the queen that the new laws are a "serious affront" to the Gospel.
It states: "The regulations purport to eliminate discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, but have the consequence of discriminating heavily against Christians of all backgrounds and denominations who hold firm to the very Faith which you pledged to uphold in your coronation oath."

That's a good move, the Christian faith is based on the Bible and the Bible does not approve of homosexuality. So, is the Bible of Christianity right, or does the Queen go along with tossing it all out for today's secular standards?
Standby for some smoooooooth PR verbiage that will put the Queen in a neutral position on the subject.
Have not read or heard anything out of the Royals in the past centuries that would indicate their belief in Jesus as God, dont expect it now!
I disagree. Whether or not any or all of the Royal Family are believers is not the point. The point is that this is just a PR stunt. The Queen must act within the constitution and that meand she cannot be petitioned except through her ministers. Oh well.
But the Queen does talk directly to the Archbishop of Canterbury, right? I suppose then it would mean that the ABC would have to bring the question up with Queen Elizabeth, the current "Defender of the Faith".
No British monarch has vetoed a piece of parliamentary legislation in 300 years, so that's not a likely scenario unfortunately. Queen Anne, I believe, was the last.
I think it will take conscientious Christians going to jail to wake up the sleepy Christians on how none of this is neutral....
You legalize homosexual "marriage" then you also legalize throwing me into prison when I refuse, on the basis of clear religious conviction, to rent an apartment to a gay couple. Of course many places in the USA already make "discrimination" against such sexual perverts a crime...just one rarely prosecuted.
I fear you are right.
The camel pokes the nose under the tent - that's okay it's just a nose. Then a little more, a little more, and eventually you end up with a 500 lb spitting, stinking, defecating camel inside your tent right next to you.
But it happens in increments, not all at once, and it's so easy every time to give in to the next increment.
