Last week, the Catholic blogosphere was roiling from Episcopal Presiding Bishop Schori's comments in the NYTimes that essentially said that Catholics, as well as Mormons, are ignorant breeders. And that Episcopalians values small families as a means to stewardship and responsibility. Well, I wrote the presiding bishop and received this response from her public relations shill. Dear Dr. Popcak: I am writing to thank you very much for the candid expression of your concern regarding the Presiding Bishops recent interview published in this past Sundays New York Times Magazine. The reality is that media interviews do not always convey the whole nature of a conversation had between interviewee and interviewer. A few paragraphs of text cannot distill with complete accuracy a lengthy conversation.
I can also assure you that the Presiding Bishop does not think other Christians uneducated, ignorant, illiterate, or somehow or otherwise not smart simply because they are not Episcopalian. In fact, Bishop Jefferts Schori has spent her entire ministry trying to reconcile many diverse peoples to each other and to Christ. I think her record on this speaks for itself. A highlight of Bishop Jefferts Schoris investiture at Washington National Cathedral on November 4 was the presence of dozens of ecumenical leaders who came to witness an important milestone in the life of the Episcopal Church, including Roman Catholics. I know that she so very much appreciated her time with them and others who witness to the common mission and ministry we all share as Christians. Please know that this comes with Bishop Jefferts Schoris prayers and best wishes for you and your loved ones as Thanksgiving and Christmas approach.
Very truly yours, Robert B. Goodfellow: Communications Aide/Office of the Presiding Bishop Here's my reply:

He he! Dr. Popcak is a hoot - he's a regular commentator in Catholic family and education subjects.
He has a lot of kids, which makes you ... different. I remember asking him to explain to my husband that he wouldn't turn into a pumpkin if we had children after 40 ... which he did, with some hemming and hawing about how it would be really nice to *sleep* sometime.
We've had two more children since then, and it WOULD be really nice to sleep sometimes ...
"A highlight of Bishop Jefferts Schoris investiture at Washington National Cathedral on November 4 was the presence of dozens of ecumenical leaders who came to witness an important milestone in the life of the Episcopal Church, including Roman Catholics."
I have been trying to find out who that is Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox attended her installation, any info?
That's right: Jefferts-Schori with a hyphen!! Just like the 1970s era feminazi she really is!!!! I know that she does not hyphenate her name, but so what? A feminazi is a feminazi!
Do you have a ping to the original statement that the bishopette made about Roman Catholics?
Sounds like Schori is related to Kerry and Rangel. She has that elitist liberal DNA that makes them so much better than others.

How many members of the Episcopal Church are there in this country?
"About 2.2 million. It used to be larger percentagewise, but Episcopalians tend to be better-educated and tend to reproduce at lower rates than some other denominations. Roman Catholics and Mormons both have theological reasons for producing lots of children."
No info at all, sorry.
Yup. Here:
Kate Schori gets all ecumenical:

Episcopalians arent interested in replenishing their ranks by having children?
No. Its probably the opposite. We encourage people to pay attention to the stewardship of the earth and not use more than their portion.
Let's see. Catholics are dumber than a bag of Frank Griswold sermons and couldn't care less what happens to the earth. Those are the only reasons why they're a billion and change and our numbers are dropping like a brick. That'll go over well when Dr. Williams drops in on the Pope next week.
UPDATE: You probably saw this one coming up the street. The Kate Schori coffee mugs.
I think 2.2 million is a fudge. There have been many leave who still remain on the books. A couple years ago, we needed our son's baptismal certificate, so called the church we used to attend to get a copy. We were still on the books as members although listed as inactive. Inactive membership is included in the membership count we were told. BTW...we left 18 years ago, so we were very long term inactive. ;) I asked them to just remove us as we had left the church.
Jefferts-Schori seems to be cut from the same cloth as both clintons and Kerry.
This is of course coming from a Luthren who is as close as a Luthren can be to the Orthodoks. But this Luthren (with three Ivy degrees, far surpassing KJS in the education department) is truly ashamed to be in "full communion" with the likes of the New World Order feminazi heretic Katharine Jefferts-Schori!!!!

Communion with heretics is a dangerous thing, HS. Known, close connections to a group of uneducated peasant descended Orthodoxers, however, will get you thrown out of some of the best clubs in NY or DC! Tough choice, that! :)
I rememeber the previous generation saying that Lutherans (many of whom were actual Dakota/Nebraska, etc. peasants, let alone descendants of them) could not be admitted to the same clubs. (We still had a pig farmer on the ELCA sexuality commission, who was the most sensible person in it. Those of us who know the history of Serbian pig farmers and their accomplishments enjoyed that one, too!!!)
Nowadays, it is only orthodox and conservative Lutherans (with Orthodox connections or not) who cannot get into those clubs. Mark Hanson and his ilk are welcome in any of them!
I agree with you that their numbers are a "fudge". It used to be that the parish rector was required by canon law to purge the parish rolls every year or at least every three years. Communicants were also required to attend, at a minimum, three Sundays each year or they could be dropped from the parish rolls.
Like you, I removed myself from the Episcopal Church. A few years later, I learned that I had not been dropped from my former parish's roll. I knew of a number of others who were still being counted on the parish roll. This is quite common throughout TEC.
I'd wager that the Episcopal Church probably has about 1.2 to 1.5 million "baptized" members and probably less "Confirmed" members.
And, I read numbers as low as 600,000 who attend an Episcopal Church at least twice yearly (Christmas & Easter, of course). (From Barna Research, I think) I tend to believe the lower numbers are closer to the truth. There has been a rather steady exodus from the church for the past 40 years - that coupled with the aging membership & an apparant distate for God's command that they "be fruitful & multiply." Were they a species of animal, rather than a heretical religous sect, they would surely qualify for protection as a threatened or endangered species.
