Uncle Dino Attends the Schori Investiture... and almost has lunch with Gene Robinson
Uncle Dino's Observations in Black and White ^ | 11/04/2006 | Uncle Dino

I attended the Schori event Saturday morning at the National Cathedral.  I accomplished my goal of sitting quietly in prayer, wearing a black arm band as a symbol of mourning.

I did not care for the preponderance of pink “It’s a Girl” buttons and overt symbols of homosexuality, especially as clergy stoles.

I chatted with 70-something gentleman from Elmira, NY who was seated next to me. I asked him how he and his parish are coping with the crisis in the church. His answer was sad, but familiar.

In essence, he and his parish recognize that there are some problems, and that some in his diocese have discontinued financial support of the diocese. But the long and short of it was this - if we ignore the problems long enough, they will go away. Very sad.

The Schori program began with lots of pomp, circumstances and color. I didn’t mind the liturgical dance and streamers, although I thought is a bit much when some of the women near me were waving the incense from the smudgers toward themselves so they could get a good whiff. I thought that was excessive.

As she entered in procession, I did see Mrs. Schori garbed in her colorful outfit. It looked peculiar, but then again it was just that the outfit was unusual.

Mrs. Schori’s homily was as expected: home, shalom, MDGs, shalom, home. ECUSA is, in my opinion, now similar to a Unitarian social club and the homily reflected that. You can read a transcript and reader comments at Kendall Harmon’s site: http://titusonenine.classicalanglican.net/?p=16034

KJS: “The great journey stories of the Hebrew Bible begin with leaving our home in Eden, they tell of wandering for a very long time in search of a new home in the land of promise, and they tell later of returning home from exile.”

Geez, I seem to remember that Adam and Eve were evicted from Eden for failing to follow God’s command. This is not exactly ‘leaving’ in search of a new home in the land of promise. They HAD a home in a land of promise - and they, like we often do, BLEW IT!

In my opinion, this new ECUSAn ‘theology’ is dangerous stuff indeed.

A comment at another blog said that the odds were that I would not last 35 minutes before having to lead. My stomach actually began to feel sick at the 25 minute mark, but I sucked it up and made it through the homily and left at the 55 minute mark, just before the baptismal sideshow. I just could not force myself to endure what I expected to see there.

I left the NatCat at 11:55 am and went down Cathedral Avenue to visit with my daughter. We then went up to the Cactus Cantina a few blocks up Wisconsin Avenue from the NatCat.

We enjoyed some quality father-daughter time and lunch at a table overlooking Wisconsin Avenue. Soon NatCat attendees started coming by, and many stopped in the Cantina for lunch. Many of the pink button set came in. What was particularly sad was to see pink button mothers with their junior high and high school-aged children. Oh, the message that these children are getting!

Near the end of our lunch, I saw a group of people getting ready to come into the Cantina from Wisconsin Avenue. I could have sworn that one of them was Mark Andrew, Gene Robinson’s same-sex partner. As the group entered, and to my amazement, it WAS Mark, with Gene leading the way.

You would have thought that Jesus Himself, or at least some rock star, had entered the place. The fawning gazes and star-stuck eyes were pathetic to see. Of course, Gene immediately held court and the diners, and the teenagers, with the blessing of their mother, went over for autographs.

I remember reading Robinson’s comments the other day that he would not be attending the event because he did not want to take away the limelight from Schori on her special day. Obviously, he changed his mind! I have never seen nor heard of Robinson NOT wanting to be in the limelight, especially if portrays him as some sort of victim. From a recent LA Times article (http://titusonenine.classicalanglican.net/?p=15986#comments ):

Immediately after her election, I confessed to Katharine: “I was completely self-serving in voting for you. It was the only way I could get off the front page!”

From his behavior at the Cantina, he has absolutely no intention of being out of the spotlight, Schori not withstanding. And the message this sends to the youth of ECUSA is not one I approve of.

I only hope now that the official separation between ECUSA and those who believe as I do will come quickly.

No way I can watch that webcast. I don't think it's very easy to get vomit off a computer monitor.
