I don't see how Gnosticism has anything to do with Christianity at all. I assume some of the Gnostics glommed onto Christianity because it was a growing movement at the time.

Gnosticism is more like Theravada Buddhism than Christianity.

The Gnostic writings have received more attention lately because they support a new form of Gnosticism — a radically feminist form of Christianity, which is really nothing more than neo-paganism. This movement uses the teachings found in Gnostic writings to support their desire for female priesthood, contraception, abortion, and deviant lifestyles.

The liberals are always looking for an alternative religion that will accomodate their childishness. Gnosticism isn't one of them. Like Buddhism (despite what many in the West think) Gnosticism is stricter than they imagine.

Some scholars argue that St. Augustine, a Manichaean gnostic prior to his conversion, never became fully converted and read the scriptures with a semi-Manichaean lense.
