The move by +Benedict XVI that seems to aim to decentralize and reorganize the western Church according to the patristic model (once again) is aimed at making the pope "primus inter pares" by choice and not by divine right (which he may have -- but not in the jurisdictional sense).

Thanks for all the background on this subject. May I ask how you would view the Pope? I would say that he is a holy Christian man for whom I have great respect. Of course from me, there would be the inevitable "but"... :) I was just wondering if you would put yourself halfway between me and a Catholic, or much closer to a Catholic's reverence.

As I do now: with reverence, as I view any other Bishop, but someone with special honor among them. This comes not just from His Petrine ministry, but from the time-proven track record of popes toeing orthodox line in the undivided Church when even Bishops of Constantinople succumbed to heresies. There is something extraordinary about papal ministry. And, please do not confuse papal personal flaws as reflecting on their ecclesiastical correctness (such as Pope Alexander VI); many a pope has been a terrible sinner but fulfilled their role of guiding the Church on that unwavering path of orthodoxy.
