MANSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Representatives of Episcopal congregations in Massachusetts sidestepped a vote on whether to endorse a report that condemns appointments of gay bishops and calls on the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada to enact a moratorium on same-sex blessings.
Instead, voters at the 220th convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts endorsed a neutral resolution that calls for more study of the 2004 report, commissioned by the head of the Anglican Communion.
At issue was the 2003 ordination of New Hampshire Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, and divisions over homosexuality in the Episcopalian priesthood.
"I don't think we need to be anxious about the state of the Episcopal Church," Bishop Thomas Shaw, an outspoken supporter of gay rights, told the 700 delegates representing 194 congregations across the state. "The unity of the Anglican community is important to all of us."

The liberals are all marking time until the 2006 General Convention. The orthodox too, for that matter.

I wish it were so, but I don't share your optimism. How can people who profess to believe in the Bible allow admitted homosexuals to rise to positions of power in the churches? Church leaders must be the best of the best, not people who are contending with grevious sin. There are people who have served Christ for decades without engaging in adultery, fornication, homosexuality, or other perversions. Yes, THOSE are the people who should be teachers. It's OK to discriminate when selecting leaders. In fact, it's REQUIRED per scripture.

In other words the liberals didn't quite have the votes to pass it, so they suggest more study while they pack the study commission with liberals and chase the conservatives out, not just out of the committee but out of the church.
In the meantime, unauthorized blessings will continue, just done quietly with a wink and nod from the bishop.
they would have had a vote if the Bishop thought he could win. This is actually a good thing - It could be if there is to be HOPE for the faith.
