Former REC Clergyman Murdered
Meam Commemorationem ^ | 9/02/2005 | Jeff

Dear Friends and Readers,

I have just received this note from a bishop in the States. Please pray for this madness to stop.

Last night Michael Osborne was murdered in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Michael's wife, Nancy, drove to Memphis with their two daughters yesterday because Hurricane Katrina had blown two trees on their house. About 7:00 p.m. Michael went to Lowe's to get a part for his malfunctioning generator, which they didn't have. They directed him to another store in a bad section of town. Somebody shot him in his car, which then ran off the road into a telephone pole. It's not known whether the shots or the impact killed him.

Michael and Nancy have six children, two grown daughters, and at home two teenage sons, and two young daughters. Would you please pray for them? The funeral will be next week, after the coroner's inquest.

I am sure that the storm has devasted the Osbornes financially, and the whole support of four children at home now falls on Nancy. If you would like to send her a donation, send it to:

Psalm 23
For Michael Osborne

1.   The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.

2.   He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3.   He restoreth my soul;
he leadeth me in the paths of
righteousness for his name's sake.

4.   Yea, though I walk through the valley of
the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff
they comfort me.

5.   Thou preparest a table before me in the
presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup Runneth over.

6.   Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of
the Lord for ever.

God Bless Michael and his Family

Oh, God Bless them! I didn't hear anything about his one on the news! Hattiesburg has been without power or phones ever since the hurricane. Things aren't as bad as New Orleans, but sometimes it's a razor's edge between civility and lawlessness.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon him with your saints, forever, for You are merciful. Amen.

It's the Reformed Episcopal Church: "The Reformed Episcopal Church was organized in New York City in 1873 by eight clergymen and twenty laymen who were formerly priests and members of the Protestant Episcopal Church."

Oh, ok. Is there an REC Church in Hattiesburg. I remember the old Episcopal Church right across the street from the public library.

Well, according to their website (checking for MS churches):

The following is a(n) Reformed Episcopal Parish.
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
5049 Lakeland Dr.
Flowood, MS 39232

The following is a(n) Anglican Province of America Parish.
St. Luke's Church
555 Cowan Rd.
Gulfport, MS 39506

The reason for the APA listing is that the APA and REC are in the process of merging.

My sister-in-law knows the family from their parish. From what I understand the Osborne's had joined the Catholic Church there in Hattiesburg Sacred Heart. Such a senseless murder. Sometimes I wonder how man can do this to fellow man but I guess this is a question as old as Cane and Able.
