From Gospel to Government: The Angry Left finds religion, and the result isn't pretty.

They're the furious faithful--the growing number of religious liberals incensed by the political influence of Christian conservatives. Last week another organization joined their ranks with promises to "reclaim Christianity" and challenge the association of vital religion with conservative politics.

As far as Patrick Mrotek, founder of the Christian Alliance for Progress, is concerned, the gloves are off: "We can no longer stand by," he announced at a Washington press conference, "and watch people speak hatred, division, war and greed in the name of our faith."

With a membership of perhaps 6,000, the Christian Alliance for Progress qualifies as the organizational equivalent of a megachurch--but not much more. Nevertheless, its policy goals are ambitious, ranging from debt forgiveness to universal health care. It proffers an agenda "founded firmly on the teachings of the Gospel." Some students of the Gospel may be surprised at how neatly such an agenda fits the Democratic Party platform: The alliance supports stem-cell research, gay marriage and abortion; it opposes the Bush tax cuts, plans to privatize Social Security and the war in Iraq.

"....and thou shalt have no strange gods before Me...."

The question, MaryZ, is "WHAT religion?"

They're the furious faithful

Christian Alliance for Progress

Judging from their views on homosexual marriage, abortion, etc. A name change is definitely in order.

Christian Alliance of the Furious Faithful = CHAFF.

Seems more appropriate for these reprobates.

Last summer the Center for American Progress, headed by John Podesta, President Clinton's former chief of staff, gathered 400 clergy and scholars at a "faith and policy" conference in Washington. Then came George Bush's re-election, made possible by church-going voters, and suddenly the "faith factor" gained new cachet among Democrats. Earlier this year, for example, Hillary Clinton told supporters in Albany that "religious and moral values" could help discourage teenage sex. In March, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi formed a working group to design a "faith agenda" for her party.

Pathetic how Democrats have to figure out how to "find religion" by having meetings and committees to figure it out.

"Furious Faithful" only works if it's made clear that they're faithful to Karl Marx, not Jesus Christ.

That may be, but it's not the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but yet another gospel of demonic origin, as Paul says that in the latter days there would be many who follow deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.

Hillary Clinton told supporters in Albany that "religious and moral values" could help discourage teenage sex.

Presupposing anyone can figure out how to inform such teenagers that 'religious and moral values' are worth holding. I wouldn't count on Hillary figuring it out any time soon.

In March, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi formed a working group to design a "faith agenda" for her party.

That's pretty much the way Jesus did it, isn't it? Some polls and focus groups, get together with the cronies and brainstorm an agenda. That's gotta be in the Gospels somewhere, we're just missing the correct 'interpretation' of what Jesus was 'really' saying. I await the wisdom of Pelosi. (This should be good for a laugh.)

Isn't that how Isaiah came up with his "platform"?

Dems are unbelievable!

Isn't that how Isaiah came up with his "platform"?

So, if we look really, really closely we can discern Isaiah would have been a registered Democrat if he had only had the opportunity?

as the Christian Alliance for Progress argues, rather confusedly: "In his sermons and in his parables, Jesus teaches that poverty can certainly be an effective weapon of mass destruction."

I knew it had to be in there somewhere! Jesus' message equates to today's political buzzwords. It just takes a 'progressive' viewpoint to discern it. Or make it up out of thin air.

Jesus didn't seem to care too much about 'physical' poverty.

Mark 14:7  For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.

Matthew 8:20  And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

Unless, of course, it's them speaking hate concerning religious conservatives.

I don't know if I would say that. Someone might mention Matthew 25 and all that feeding of the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty and clothing the naked being given a value by Jesus.

As a complete aside related to this: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

This is an interesting line: "The beasts of the field and the birds of the air have their holes and their hiding places; but the men who fight and die for Italy enjoy only the light and the air." It's a line from a pretty famous speech from 133 BC.

The Great Exception? Not a one of them but should have his mouth washed out with soap when they talk about conservatives, but we're the hateful, mean-spirited, politics-of-personal-destruction ones!

Absolutely! Many conservatives seem to forget this. (On another thread, someone once posted that Jesus meant only what used to be called "the deserving poor"!) I've always been of the view that it is at least as important for us to give as for the poor to receive.

I have known individual liberals (as well as individual conservatives) who take it seriously, but many of those hold actual poor people in utter contempt, which I don't think is quite what Christ had in mind.

Even to the extent that liberals purport to care about the poor and to the extent that they are sincere, well, Chesterton has a passage (I don't recall where; it may come to me) about breaking the virtues apart: they lose their proper identity in separation and go wild, lose their "virtue" as it were.
