Possible Replacements for Cardinal McCarrick as Archbishop of Washington, DC
Like it or not, the venerable Cardinal McCarrick of Washington will be hitting 75 this July 7th. You know what that means! Our sources tell us his resignation will be accepted "on an expedited timetable." Coupled with his public desire to retire early, Washington should have a new leader within the year. This episcopal see is highly visible due to it being located in our nation's capital and has been rewarded, since its inception, with its archbishops being created cardinals -- O'Boyle, Baum, Hickey, and McCarrick. The next archbishop will almost certainly follow in this tradition.
Here is the first official list, once again, of those candidates most often named as possible successors to McCarrick by our Vatican sources: Edwin O'Brien (U.S. Military Archdiocese), William Lori (Bridgeport), Charles Chaput (Denver), Raymond Burke (St. Louis), and John Foley (Pontifical Council for Social Communications). We tend to think that its O'Brien's to lose. He was rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome for many years prior to being an named auxilary bishop in New York and then Archbishop of the Military Ordinate of the U.S. Currently at 66, O'Brien is the ideal age, being neither too young or too old. Bishop Lori has deep ties to Washington, DC being Cardinal Hickey's longtime close collaborator and vicar general before being called to Bridgeport, CT. His only being 54 may work against him though. Archbishops Chaput and Burke are seen as "Rambo Catholic" bishops -- that is, they are not afraid of teaching the Church's moral truths in a very public manner. Both are seen as emerging leaders of the American episcopacy, and choosing either one would signal Pope Benedict's approval of their pastoral zeal. Their appointments would shake things up in our nation's capital, perhaps exactly what His Holiness desires. Archbishop Foley is a native of Philadelphia, but has been in his Vatican curial seat since 1984 (most likely the current recordholder!). So his time is due to move on to a new pasture. If he isn't named to Washington, he could also have a good chance at Baltimore. So there you have it, my dearest vaticanisti lovers. Start placing your bets.

Chaput is brilliant. I would love to see him in the Washington slot.

I hope it not Foley. I think he's probably a good man, he just hasn't got any backbone. I'm afraid he'd be another Cardinal Law.

Anybody know anything about these men? Chaput and Burke of course are well known here on FR, but the rest of these men are relative unknowns. Bishop Lori is a name I can't recall hearing before.
To: Diago
with Pope Benedict XVI making the selection I am voting for a staunch conservative. Chaput and Burke fill that slot but are well placed in their own dioceses.
Won't make a prediction about this position. But will venture another.
Look for Bishop Vasa to move from Eastern Oregon to a larger diocese.

I've been looking at Bishop Lori's writings. Looks like a good man. No churchspeak. His writings are clear and easily understood - even by me!

I would LOVE to see Chaput there, too. Maybe he could replace that very awful 'Kundalini Jesus' they have over the altar at the Basilica there. I could hardly attend Mass there, it is so grotesque.

O'Brien is pretty impressive. I've seen him on EWTN several times, and he appears to be orthodox, as well as an advocate for the people in the armed forces.

Dear old and tired,
Bishop Lori is a nice man, but my memory of him is that he was rather bland, inoffensive. I'm not sure he's really of the caliber that the Pope may want to make the Cardinal Archbishop of Washington.
Bishop O'Brien has a sterling reputation.
I'm not sure, either, that Pope Benedict would appoint Archbishop Foley, as it seems he doesn't have experience leading a diocese, and most folks think that's usually a prerequisite for Washington.
I would be delighted with either Archbishop Burke or Archbishop Chaput, as long as they bring their "Rambo Catholic" style with them. I would very much enjoy seeing the discomfiture of all the CINO politicians in Washington after the announcement that no parish in the Archdiocese of Washington could allow openly pro-abort pols to receive the Blessed Sacrament.
I would be surprised, and absolutely beside myself with joy, should one bishop from Lincoln, Nebraska get the nod. Alas, I think that, though, is highly unlikely. Too bad. The mass excommunications would really wake people up.

Dear bboop,
Are you talking about the mosaic of Christ the Pantocrator?
Here is a description from the Basilica's site:
"Christ in Majesty is the centerpiece of the Great Upper Church. At 3,600 square feet and containing nearly 3 million tiles, it is the one of the largest mosaics of Jesus in the world. John de Rosen designed the image in the Eastern Christian tradition of the Pantocrator, meaning the Ruler of All, or Celestial Emperor."
I have seen more than one Orthodox or Eastern Catholic comment on the image, which, to them, is not grotesque.

I wonder if there's any info on who might become Archbishop of San Francisco? Has anybody heard anything? Thanks.

I knew Bp. Lori in DC when he was Card. Hickey's theologian. He is a careful and kind person. Whether he can handle the high-stakes world of DC is another matter.

I wonder if there's any info on who might become Archbishop of San Francisco? Has anybody heard anything? Thanks. From the same website, diffrent article:
"These five names are most often mentioned by our sources: Bishop Daniel Walsh (Santa Rosa, CA), Bishop Tod Brown (Orange, CA), Joseph Fessio, SJ, Archbishop Charles Chaput (Denver), and Auxilary Bishop Salvatore Cordileone (San Diego, CA)."

Yes, that one. My husband loves it, which leads me to believe that others do. But I did NOT. Ah well, it's the price of strong opinions. I am glad there are people who love it. Me, give me an old church, filled with candles, dark and holy. With a great crucifix center front.

Dear bboop,
I guess my point is that the mosaic of Christ the Pantocrator is a very traditional theme rendered in a very traditional manner, although it is a manner more generally associated with Eastern Christianity,

I think of all the bishops on the list Foley is my least favorite. I hope it's not him. I will be thrilled with any of the others.
I hope you're right about Foley not having the experience to be appointed archbishop of D.C. It makes sense to me.
