The first large-scale advertising campaign for the priesthood is to be launched by the Roman Catholic Church as it tries to mobilise the young masses who mourned the death of Pope John Paul II.
Youth workers are also using an alternative 18-to-30s festival to help shore up lay interest following the death of the "young people's pope".
The advertising campaign, "Get collared for the challenge of a lifetime", will run on the London Underground during the summer, and could extend across the country.
Beer mats carrying the same message will be distributed at youth festivals and in chaplaincies.
Father Paul Embery, director of the National Office for Vocation, an agency of the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales, said: "We recognise that following the death of the Holy Father there has been an increase in interest in priesthood and the Church generally. We are trying to develop that into something more long term."
The agency Catholic Youth Services is planning an 18-to-30s festival in Birmingham next year. Its director, Helen Bardy, said: "We want to reach out to young people in the fantastic way that Pope John Paul II did, at a time when feeling about his teaching is strong."
Fr Embery said: "Previously we have only advertised within the Church. By taking the campaign into other areas of young people's lives, we are hoping it will give them something to think about and keep the interest high."
The death of the pope on April 2 prompted a significant increase in the number of vocation inquiries in Britain. Website inquiries about the priesthood and other religious orders more than doubled to 846 last month.

That's the same holiness and mysticism, btw, that was nearly completely bleached out of the Church in the heady days of the 1970s, when Vatican II was being wildly misinterpreted by the AmChurch leftist fools.
Thank God for John Paul the Great, Benedict XVI. Also, thank God for Mother Angelica, for keeping hope alive until the abuses can be reversed.

Have not scene much evidence of that here in the UK. There may have been some cult appeal for the young when JPII went walkabout but why wait for his death to capitalise on this? Entering a UK seminary (are there any left?) would be certain death for anyone serious and devout. In order to put bums on seats, the 'right' candidate will be trendy, intellectually dim and eager to suck up to his superiors as they promote their latest heresy. Not only should parents not send their children to modern Catholic schools, according to Bishop Sheen, but young men should not be sent to modern seminaries!

I honestly don't know what you are talking about that JPII did to reverse what was happening in the 1970's. Can you please list some of the things he did?

Sorry if I misunderstood. I got the idea that something was being removed from the Church that JPII supplied, thereby reversing the "flow" so to speak.
But I'm still curious, what makes JPII "the Great"?
Didn't they run an ad campaign in Playboy ten years or so ago? Wonder how that worked . . .

Did not think of that. Having seen the size of some monasteries with only a few inmates, I think I shall be packing my bags! Don't fancy bee-keeping though ....... however, some actually brew their own beer. Can't be bad ...
