St. Patrick's Breast Plate
Saint Patrick

Posted on 03/17/2005 12:08:14 AM PST by Stubborn

It is called the “Lorica” and also “The Deer's Cry.” According to tradition, St. Patrick uttered it while on his way to Tara, where he was for the first time to confront the power of the Pagan High-King of Ireland. Assassins were in wait for him and his companions, but as he chanted the hymn it seemed to the hidden band that a herd of deer went by.

Even though Saint Patrick was a very great Saint, he must have been scared out of his wits when he was praying this prayer.

SAINT PATRICK Bishop, Apostle of Ireland (373-464)

St. Patrick's Breast Plate

I ARISE today Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.

I arise to-day Through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to save me From snares of devils,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in a multitude.

Christ shield me today against poison,
against burning,
against drowning,
against wounding,
So that there may come to me abundance of reward.

Christ with me,
Christ in front of me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ where I lie,
Christ where I sit,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every one who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I arise to-day Through a mighty strength,
the invocation of the Trinity,
Through belief in the threeness,
Through confession of the oneness Of the Creator of Creation.

Amen!

HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY!!

Saint Patrick, the glorious apostle of Ireland, was born in France, in the year 387. His father was an official of the roman government. His mother's brother was Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours. When Saint Patrick was almost sixteen years old, he was captured by pirates and brought to Ireland, where he met the people that would one day be his spiritual children. Saint Patrick was miraculously freed, and returned to France. He was sent back to Ireland as a bishop by Saint Celestine, the Pope.

Saint Patrick's most noted spiritual daughter in Ireland was Saint Bridget, called the “Mary of the Gael”.

Saint Patrick drove all the snakes - symbols of the devil - out of Ireland.
He raised 33 persons from the dead.
By making the sign of the cross, he caused the earth to swallow up a heathen who mocked the virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Saint Patrick's charioteer, Saint Odran, was martyred in place of him by some Celtic heathens.
Saint Patrick was one hundred and six years old when he died.
Saint Patrick, Saint Bridget and Saint Columbkille are all buried together and are the patron saints of Ireland.

St. Patrick, please, pray for us!

I like it.

A Happy and Blessed St. Patrick's Day to you. Last night at the Presantified Liturgy the priest wished everyone the same, reminded us it was Lent...and advised a designated driver!

Everyone knows that St. Patrick's Day is as good as a Sunday - so long as you go to Mass first thing in the morning, you're released from all your Lenten obligations. Just another one of God's gifts to the Irish.

Thanks for the ping.

Happy St. Patrick's day to you too! I lost a brother when I was 20 years old, he was 7 when he died and his name was Patrick. He was killed tragically in an accident involving his school bus, he was beautiful and loving and the baby of the family. Remembering him lovingly right now, along with St. Patrick.

And one last thing, no matter how many times I see your tagline, I nod in full agreement.

Reflection.

St. Bonaventure once said that the day you no longer burn with love and concern for souls, many others will die of the cold. Where can we go to increase our love? To whom can we turn to find help? I am convinced that the Holy Spirit has raised up hopes in this century to focus our attention and to concentrate our devotion upon the Holy Family. Because in the Holy Family we are going to find the source of strength. We are going to find the encouragement we need when we have distressful losses on all sides.

The Holy Family is the place where we go when we feel like weak nobodies, incapable of withstanding the onslaught of the enemies of the Church, because Christ has raised up the Holy Family as the model of the Christian home, to be sure, but as the nucleus of the New Covenant Church-family of God showing that through detachment, through renunciation, through poverty, through mortification, through trials and sufferings, the war will be won. The Savior will be born and salvation will spill out in all directions and cover the earth. ...

Saint
Patrick

Lorica of Saint Patrick

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In the prayers of patriarchs,
In preachings of the apostles,
In faiths of confessors,
In innocence of virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
From snares of the devil,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a mulitude.

I summon today all these powers between me and evil,
Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom,
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of women and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul.
Christ shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that reward may come to me in abundance.

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation

So sad to hear about your brother, but without a doubt, to die at seven years old means he is with Our Lord, Lady and all the saints and angels!

Eternal rest grant unto Patrick Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him!

And one last thing, no matter how many times I see your tagline, I nod in full agreement.

Thanks! I know its just something simple - but I think it sure speaks volumes.

Happy St. Patrick's day to you too!

THATS the one I was looking for! Thanks for posting that one Salvation!

Since the first time I heard the Lorica, I've loved it. My favorite part is the "Christ with me, Christ before me, etc. - that whole part.
