Purpose Driven Life

Posted on 03/14/2005 10:28:37 AM PST by blue-duncan

For all of you Rick Warren fans out there, did you happen to catch the interview with the Brian Nichols, ex-hostage Ashley Smith? She was reading "Purpose Driven Life" as part of her devotions and read part of chapter 33 to him and then asked him what he thought his purpose in life was. This was part of the discussion that convinced Nichols to give himself up. We should all have her boldness in the face of trials.

Rick Warren is using the subsidiary of Harper Collins to publish his books.
Harper Collins is the Publisher of the Satanic Bible.
I have a problem with that, and I think many other people would also.

Do you eat carrots?

Do you know that practicing homosexuals also eat carrots?

Do you still feel comfortable eating carrots knowing that practicing homosexuals also eat them?

(I'm just extending your silly logic.)

It's an excellent introduction to a relationship with Christ.

An introduction. That's exactly what I'm hearing from friends and acquaintances.

If he were to say, 'Stay here, no need to read Scripture, my book contains all answers.' then I think some serious criticism would be forthcoming. For now, it just sounds like ankle-biting.

You are right on with your comments. What she said and read to him God used to get through to him and he surrendered. Thanks.

Exactly right. And, he's not out for the money, 'cuz he encourages the reader to "pass the book along."

Maybe Jesus saved her life using Rick Warrens book.

you and 99% of America - myself included, grasp the concept that God is big enough to work through Warrens pen

You know - just ranting (and not at you specifically) - the biggest detractors to Warren or any book of the genre are the first ones to exhibit the least Christ-like characteristics here, while holding themselves up as puritanically unadulterated KJV stock

they have no concept of how assinine they appear

Uh, Amazon UK says there is a different publisher:

Paperback 272 pages (April 1992)
Publisher: Avon Books

Have we learned nothing from Dan Rather? Show us your links!

Should we boycott Amazon because they distribute it? What about the companies that supply the ink and paper? What about the companies linked to those companies because they share personnel on their boards of directors?

Harper Collins is the Publisher of the Satanic Bible.

as a matter of fact sink' - anyone who was alive - and is now dead, at one time ate a carrot -

while a happy looking vegetable - its pithy moist orange core is rapt with sin and evil

death will surely come to all who taste

peeling will not help

I have not judged you, please reference the post number and specific comment. Thank you.

I was trying to figure out who "judged" pro610. That being said, Pro610 seems to have no problem in judging Rick Warren and broadbrushing every author and every book under the Zondervan umbrella, but when someone challenges him, his reaction is "how dare you judge me?"

I'm reminded of the verse "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" I think we might apply the same thing here: "Can any good thing come out of Zondervan?" As this young lady might say: "Come and see."

Chapter 33 is entitled How Real Servants Act

Some highlights:

Jesus however, measured greatness in terms of service, not status. God determines your greatness by how many people you serve, not how many people serve you. snip

While knowing your shape is important for serving God, having the heart of a servant is even more important. Remember, God shaped you for service, not for self-centeredness. Without a servant's heart, you will be tempted to misuse your shape for personal gain. You will also be tempted to use it as and excuse to exempt yourself form meeting some needs.snip

Real servants make themselves available to serve. Servants don't fill up their time with other pursuits that could limit their availability.snip

Real servants pay attention to needs. Servants are always on the lookout for ways to help others. snip

Real servants do their best with what they have. Servants don't make excuses, procrastinate, or wait for better circumstances. snip

Real servants do every task with equal dedication. Whatever they do, servants "do it with all their heart." snip

Real servants are faithful to their ministry. Servants finish their tasks, fulfill their responsibilities, keep their promises, and complete their commitments. They don't leave a job half undone, and they don't quit when they get discouraged. snip

Real servants maintain a low profile. Servants don't promote or call attention to themselves.

Zondervan is the publisher

I went to the Zondervan website which truthinheart appears (but doesn't) to link to.

I punched in Purpose Driven Life at Zondervan's search engine and nothing came up.

This cheese stinks.

Try again Zondervan is the publisher.

Not that it matters. It's a goofus argument.

A well made point by you IMO.

Thank you for discussing the content of the book instead of the tangental "issues".

Most of the people who I know who have read the book use it during small group bible studies as a starting point for scripture reading and conversation on how the messages in the bible apply to our "modern" lives. It's a tool, and a darn good one for the group I was in when I read it.

What is really interesting is we are using Zondervan's "Discipleship Series" for the followup small group studies after the 40 Days of Purpose. The series was originally a Navigators Series for friendship evangelism and Zondervan took it over without any changes.

Well, I have the hardback version right in front of me, and Zondervan is the publisher.

But I am unaware that Zondervan is a subsidiary of Harper Collins.

Thanks for the post. No doubt that God was at work in a great way during this situation. And yes, God can even use a book on the New York Times best sellers list. We can never put God in a box. Jesus ministered to people on their level.

What is saddening to me is to read some of these posts on this thread. One of the hardest temptation to resist is the need for vindication or the need to be right. Yet this is one of the things that hinders our witness the most. Humilty in spirit helps us be more effective as servants and in ministering to those around us. Thankfully, we have God's help in living out this life in a way that is pleasing to Him.

I continue to pray for all the families touched by this tragedy.

So, Rick Warren, not Jesus, saved this woman's life! Astounding.

At least she faced what might have been a pretty crappy day, looked him right in the eye and had something useful to say.

I'd rather be stuck in a room with her, Rick Warren and that murderer, than be trapped in a room with a bunch of FReepers scratching each other's eyes out over exactly how salvation works.
