AS REAGAN CITED EVIL IN THE USSR, IT'S NOW TIME TO NAME IT IN U.S. -- AND REST OF WEST

By Michael H. Brown

In a biography of Ronald Reagan is described that dramatic speech in which the late president courageously named the Soviet Union as the "focus of evil in the world," as an "evil empire."  It was a speech that had an effect around the world -- contributing dramatically to the demise of the Soviet Union (as we pointed out last week).

What we didn't point out, and will now, is that in the audience at the speech -- in the press corps -- was a newsman who openly and smugly smirked as Reagan spoke in such an openly spiritual fashion.

That smirk is a symbol, an emblem. It is shared by many in the U.S. who put all kinds of labels on who they are and what they represent but who at their root -- like the Communists -- have an antipathy for God in their agenda.

They are not to be reviled. They are not to be persecuted. Most of them are victims. They have been sold a bill of goods. Most often, they are not intentionally evil.

But the influence is there, and it is time to name them as the new focus of wickedness in world.

Put another way, there is a large segment of Western civilization that is working misguidedly and fervently -- in the media, in fields of science, in our educational systems, in our judiciary -- to erode respect for God. They don't want words like "evil" used because it is a word that exposes them. At the famous speech at which President Reagan named the Soviet Union as "the focus of evil" were indeed those who considered what he said as inane, simplistic. It was a former actor being "superstitious."

This was the idea of media types, intellectuals, and others of a secularized bent, and they stand themselves as a focus of evil that (though prayer) must be dismantled.

For though it is under a different guise -- in the way of Ivy Tower types versus Moscow Leninists, in the way of reporters versus propagandists, and in the way of politically-correct thought police as opposed to the KGB -- it still spells a dalliance with the dark side and an effort (as was the case in Russia) to rope an entire society into godlessness.

The similarities are stark. Like the Communists, many secularists in the United States are nonbelievers who can be either liberal or conservative and feel that those who believe do so out of weakness.

Like Communists, they have swiftly taken over systems of education, law, art, and entertainment.

Like Communists, they control much of the court system -- from which they wield new social influence.

Like Communists, they seek to ban competing thought.

And like the former Soviets, what they desire at the root of it all is elimination of God from every aspect of humanity. Like old-time Soviets, they get rid of crosses and the Ten Commandments and mangers in December.

Like Communists, their respect for life is so small that they even allow partial-birth abortion.

It is not an agenda that is really political (as portrayed by so many conservative opponents). Instead, as Reagan recognized, it is a metaphysical battle -- an opposition to anything that admits to a higher cause, to anything that recognizes the spiritual dimension, and especially to anything that tends toward Heaven.

In this fashion, it is America's own "evil empire," and it is rampant among a distressingly large number of psychologists, judges, lawyers, doctors, bureaucrats, and politicians who in their "mature" ratiocination -- in their "enlightenment" -- consider Christianity quaint, and even dangerous (as Marxist-Leninists did). There may be more of these people than there were actual dyed-in-the-wool Communists.

They are the ones who allow pornography, wanton sex, teen promiscuity, homosexual "marriage," abortion, cloning and runaway technology and commercialism to dominate our lives. Although they tend toward "liberalism," they know no political boundaries.

Of most immediate concern are the media, and this extends to Hollywood -- which exports violence and lust in the same fashion as Soviets exported atheism.

Let's call it what it is: Anything that promotes sin detracts from the Creator. It is a form of atheism.

And as Communism dominated Soviet government, sin now dominates our world of entertainment.

"After penning down a book for children, pop diva Madonna is creating her own line of sexy clothes aimed at girls as young as two," notes a recent news story. "According to The Sun, Madonna has already finished making the clothes for her range, which includes miniskirts and see through tops. Some of the clothes are said to be inspired from her children's book 'English Rose.' Targeted at girls between the age-group of two to sixteen, the collection includes a range called 'Sweet Heart' which uses see-through chiffon, the other range called 'Faux Leather' will have biker jackets and ra-ra skirts bearing the slogan 'Love.'"

This is evil and we pray for these people, because in many cases they don't realize what they are doing. More worrisome yet is outright atheism. It is the deepest manifestation of pride: that humans can be the highest form of intelligence. The school of thought goes back to Aristotle, and way before that to the Garden, but had recent origins during the so-called Renaissance and then Darwinism -- which began the recent trend toward self-glorification.

Science has grown to be a pseudo-religion that in many quarters, in many ways, offers up a threat that can be compared to Communism. When a major biologist or astronomer or atomic scientist admits to atheism, he is admitting to a sin that in God's eyes may go beyond that of a murderer, a sin against the Holy Spirit Himself.

It is time for Westerners to recognize this.

If it was Reagan's inspiration to name evil in the Soviet Union, it is now time, in his memory, to focus on its domestic manifestations. "For many centuries Christians were warned that Satan would come to them as a seducer and offer them the world’s bounty—prosperity, beauty, fame—in return for their immortal soul," wrote a rabbi recently. "This legend has survived in modern America in the form of many films, novels, even songs—remember ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’?—depicting Satan promising untold riches in exchange for a soul. In our age Satan need not bother. Who among us has a soul left to sell anyway? America, the greatest country ever founded, is today foundering as its original ideals are eroded through a culture of suffocating soullessness. Pope John Paul II’s warning that America is in danger of surrendering to a 'soulless vision of life' is an understatement. America, the only country in the world to have God stamped on its money—not even the Vatican or Israel have it—is being laid low by mind-numbing materialism, vapidity, and vulgarity in a culture that increasingly resembles a soulless corpse."

There is evil -- soullessness -- in our midst. There is the occult -- out in the open now. There are things in supermarkets that were once reserved for the pages of Playboy. There is a cynicism toward Christianity -- especially in Western Europe. And so let us now name it. We will be doing this in coming weeks.

Is there really an "evil empire" here? Yes. When a singer struts half nakedly, or in black leather, or belts out a song of lust; when a guitarist writes through a haze of drugs; when a doctor looks upon a patient as a body and only a body, without a soul; when a scientist laughs at the notion of Christ; when companies seek only to profit from their fellow humans -- to gouge, to dehumanize -- these are manifestations of evil and if not rooted out will lead soon to the demise Western democracy and a world of upheaval like nothing we have ever seen.

Russia has spread its errors, just as Our Lady of Fatima said they would.

Important words, that I want to memorize. It is a metaphysical battle:

And we need to listen and act to combat this danger.

~ PRAYER ~

St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle
Be our protection against the wickedness
and snares of the devil;
May God rebuke him, we  humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
 by the power of God,
Thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits
who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
 Amen

How about this excerpt?

In Janice Connell's book, The Visions of the Children, there is an interesting historical note regarding a message from Medjugorje visionary, Marija Pavlovic, which was delivered to President Reagan during a meeting at the White House with Russian President Gorbachev on Dec. 8, 1987.

Here is the account as it appeared in Janice Connell's book:

Message to President Reagan from Marija Pavlovic. The following was translated from the Croatian newspaper, Sveta Bastina, February 1988 issue; transcribed from Medjugorje Herald, vol.2, no. 6 -- Mary's Room MR-18, 12/88.

"Dear President Reagan:

"God's Holy Mother is appearing each day in this small village of Medjugorje, Yugoslavia. She is giving us a message of peace. We know your concern for world peace and are remembering you in our prayers each day. You are very close to our hearts and we want you to know that you can count on our prayers and sacrifices to help you in your great task.

"Our Holy Mother has said that with prayer and fasting wars can be avoided. May her message help you and her daily visits be a sign to you of God's loving concern for His people.

"United in prayer, and in the Heart of Jesus and Mary we send our love and greet you with the peace of the Queen of Peace.

Marija Pavlovic"

[End of Letter]

>>>I cannot name the evil here. It has asked me to stop posting to it.

Just mention its name without pinging "it" and it will be all over you for talking about "it" behind its back.

Kruschev, besides his comment that, "We will bury you", also presciently commented to the effect that: we will grow closer to you and your system will grow closer to ours.

Of course there are those, spinning their webs, who wanted that all along.

But it's name was not mentioned and doing so would would have been against its special newly modified golden rule. I thought the post a funny joke, but apparently it cannot take a joke and knew that it was being joked about even though it was never mentioned by its nick.

And who can say with certainty what 'it' was referring to?

It depends on what the meaning of 'it' is.

Got it?
