As for your other suggestions, it is always helpful to ping the man who controls the code when making suggestions.

Yesterday when it was learned that WILLIE BROWN has been appointed by Schwarzenegger to the transition team - and there was not a collective OUTCRY OF DISGUST by FReepers - that's when I knew something has gone terribly wrong on FreeRepublic.com.
I guess you can't ban someone because they're a liberal spy but seems to me my beloved FreeRepublic.com has been taken over by a bunch of traitors or something.
Can anyone relate?

I'd be happy if John would just fix the "New Posts to You" quirk. That's so annoying.

How about a fundraising function like moveon.org? FR rapidly raises money in its "FReepathons", so why not use that fundraising prowess to finance ads (print, tv, radio, etc.) that rebut the left's fallacious assertions?

3. Smilies and other icons available when posting messages You've got to be kidding. I hope you're a girl because those little smilies are (imo) pretty gay.
I have a great suggestion for making things better though:
DONATE monthly. Help do away with the Quarterly fundraiser. Every little bit helps.

Get a life!
Do not fix what ain't broke! We do not need smiley faces, we do not need to be like a junior high chat room. This is an adult site, leave it as such.
If, and that is a big if... IF FR has anything wrong with it, that would be IMHO, to much PC'dom in it's ranks. As Rush stated yesterday, if you want to appeal to the voting majority, you must embrace the Social issues... I say that is total BS, but, they are up there(FR included), and I am down here...
Keep your suggestions to yourself about how to make this place better. All you stated is totally meaningless in regard to re-establishing our constitutional limited republic. Suggesting anything but damn near a call to arms is just fluff... remember that...

Sorry, I disagree. FR is THE best right now, in terms of being able to post graphics, stories, etc. As to emoticons, don't make me come over there. Anyone smart enough to post an emoticon from scratch is smart enough to post something cooler.
BTW, stole this off another web site. I'm saving it for DU trolls. Whaddya think?

If it works superbly don't fixit.

(Don't Panic!)
1)maybe add a feature that allows posters to automatically insert a quote of the post they are replying to. As it is now, we have to scroll down to the message, copy, paste, then type in html tags around the text manually.
2)posters can edit/deleate their messages feature.
To: RightFighter
Have the search default to "order by post time" rather than "order by relevance".

I'd like to see the number of the comment I'm replying to posted on my own comment.
Seems like I'm always typing sentences like, "Your caption in #23 is a winner" or "I don't agree with your statement in #238".
I feel if I don't include such a sentence, the reader of my post won't remember what the comment is that I'm referring to or where it can be found without endless scrolling.
Hope you get my drift.

- More posting categories. We've got all fifty states but only a handful of countries. What about most of the major Euro countries- Germany, Russia and UK we have, but many articles are posted about France and it seems like it would make sense to put them in their own category. Perhaps the following topics could be added: Balkans; Poland; Spain; make UK- Ireland and UK; and then add a "Europe" category to cover all the other countries.
Same with Middle East. There are so many articles about Iraq it obviously could do with its own category. Iran; Syria; Afghanistan; Pakistan/India (because many Pakistan threads have to do with India and vice versa); Turkey; perhaps Jordan; Saudi Arabia/Kuwait; and a further Middle East cat to cover what's left or simply a Middle East cat to cover all.
Or one could further divide it up as Middle East (with parenthetical listings of which countries were covered) and Asia (which could then include Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, China). China gets a lot of threads though so perhaps a seperate cat for it would be good.
There's also a need for an Africa category.
It would make the "post thread" page a lot more complex but I think it would be worth it later for keeping everything sorted out.
-
There should be an evolution v creation category since there is a fairly sizeable faction here that like to argue on those threads. One could differentiate that from "science/space exploration etc".
-
I think a "Hot Thread" flag would be pretty cool. Maybe a small sidebar that shows threads of any subject that are getting a high volume of replies.
-
I think there should be a link to the search function on the "My Comments" page. For some reason, there isn't. I have to always open a random thread to get to the search link and then click there to get to the searh engine. Perhaps a function that included the search engine on the "My Comments" page by user settings would be nice?
-
One feature that might be too complex but would be useful would be a "view only this exchange" link at the bottom of every post on a thread. For example, we now have this:
[ Post Reply | Private Reply | To 1 | View Replies | Report Abuse ]
If you had a link that would reload the thread to only show the back and forth between two people, that would be pretty cool. You could use it for yourself as well as just argument voyeurism. But it would be complicated to include an exchange with more than two posters I suppose.
-
Perhaps a feature that automatically searched for articles as you tried to post them in order to cut down on duplicate threads and poor use of search feature by those who want to post threads. This would also save a lot of bandwidth.
- Also, just a few very simple html instructions on the post reply page. There used to be a small set of instructions and I thought they were pretty handy. You know, just a few- how to make text bold, italics, colored; how to make a link; how to post an image. It's like I said, there used to be a few instructions but they were eliminated for some reason- I though they were useful.
If I had to pick from all the suggestion I've just made, I'd want the search engine link on the My Comments page. Very easy to fix and it would help save bandwidth. After that, the automatic search feature on the post page and then the new categories.

I think we should have a section of the site which tells you which freepers are on the site at the specific time.

MY ONE AND ONLY SUGGESTION WOULD BE...
Once you contribute for the current quarter, the fundraising posts that are on every single thread go away!
