Alaska Bear Mauling Recorded on Tape

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The graphic sounds of a fatal bear attack were recorded, Alaska state troopers discovered Wednesday while reviewing a tape recovered near the bodies of a wildlife author and his girlfriend.

Trooper Chris Hill said Timothy Treadwell may have been wearing a wireless microphone likely activated when he was attacked by the brown bear at Katmai National Park and Preserve. The videotape has audio only; the screen remains blank for the three-minute recording.

"They're both screaming. She's telling him to play dead, then it changes to fighting back. He asks her to hit the bear," Hill said. "There's so much noise going on. I don't know what's him and what might be an animal."

The bodies of Treadwell, 46, and Amie Huguenard, 37, both of Malibu, Calif., were found near Kaflia Bay on Monday after an air taxi pilot arrived to pick them up. The pilot contacted the National Park Service and state troopers to report a brown bear was apparently sitting on top of human remains at the campsite.

After rangers arrived one of them shot and killed a large brown bear when the animal charged through the dense brush. Rangers and troopers later killed a smaller bear apparently stalking them.

An autopsy on the human remains confirmed Wednesday the couple were killed by bears.

Troopers recovered video and still photography equipment as well as three hours of video footage from the site, across Shelikof Strait from Kodiak Island.

Much of the footage is close-up shots of bears — for which Treadwell was well-known.

Some scenes show bears no more than a few feet from Treadwell, co-author of "Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska." Others show a more timid Huguenard leaning away as bears come close to her on the bank of a river.

Which is why you shoot the person you are camping with in the leg instead of the bear.

The remains were partially buried which indicates some of them was eaten.

Jeff Cooper told a story about a guy in Africa who disappeared. After a day of searching they found his jeep, a shoe and a movie camera set up on a tripod.

After searching for several more days, the authorities mailed the belongings back to the relatives. They were the ones who developed the film.

On the film, there was a lion pride and our hero walking toward the lions and waving back at the camera. He walked up to the nearest lion and swatted it on it's rump.

Supposedly, there was ample film to continue recording what happened next.

Actually it was the sound of a loud bear fart with Timmy getting his wish of being turned into bear feces. The bear apparently read his book and was just trying to help out.

I am just not a good enough actor to fake being dead while a bear is eating my arm.

Does PETA know that he beat the poor helpless Bear??? He should be lectured postmortemly!!

How do you tell a Grizzly from a Black Bear. Climb a tree, if the bear climbs the tree to get you it is a Black. If it simply knocks the tree over to get you it's a Grizzly!

Pray for GW and the Truth

I once had a simular experience with a Brahma bull. My girl friend and I were going to a costume/square dance party at this dude ranch. We decided to dress up in a cow outfit with me in the front and the front legs and her in the back in the back legs. It was very hot in the costume and we had to go down this winding road to get to the barn where the dance was. I decided to take a shortcut across this field when half the way across we catch the attention of this Brahma bull. My girl friend started to panic and asked me what to do. I told her to be quiet and to stand real still, which we did. The bull came up to us and started sniffing around, got to the rear of us and start pushing on my girl friend and making a lot of strange noices. Suddenly it started to lick her backside. She whispered to me, "My God what are we going to do now". I whispered back, "I'm fixing to bend over and eat some grass, I suggest you brace yourself".

Well, I haven't read the second page of comments yet, but I'm waiting to see the movie. I figure they'll call it "The Bear Witch Project."

My apologies if this pun has been posted. I thought he made his own best pun with starting the grizzly people group.

I wonder if they voted by absentee ballot for Gray?

They'll both be voting Democrat next election.

a 9mm is just going to piss a brown/grizzly off.

I'm not an ammo / gun expert - several here - but the nice thing about the 9mm is that you have more rounds in the clip. Many more.

My shotguns only hold 5 or 6 - one chambered, rest in the magazine.

Granted, a 12 ga. slug packs a bit more punch than a 9mm round.

Especially at close range - like a bear looking for a snack.

The article does mention that both bears were "aggressive" - I wonder if that has anything to do with the time of year up there?

Informed sources have informed that the Las Vegas tiger sent a private congratulatory message to the Alaskan bear.

Surpressed giggle.

Locals call them "dinner bells" with condiments

LoL!

Saw this cartoon in the local paper when I was in Alaska...

Two bears standing on the front porch of a house. Through the picture window you see a guy sitting on the couch, watching TV. One bear turns to the other and says, "Wait to you see this! Just hit that button (door bell) and a snack pops out!"

Sounds like things got a little kinky there at the end.

This somehow reminds me of that animal rights lady who was trampled by the bull in Spain.

Environmentalists should periodically sacrifice themselves to wild animals to appease nature.

Bwahahahahahahahaaa. That's a good one!!

Seriously, though. While it's tragic to be mauled to death by a bear, this guy, the so-called expert, should have known better. They're called wild animals for a reason. I'd like to nominate him for this year's Darwin Award.
