It would have been better for W. to have Davis and the democRATS in office and making a liberal hell called California. But who knows. If Arnie does well, California economy picks up, it will help W.

I think Thomas Jefferson stated that the downfall of the Republic will be not the people electing a person who they need, but elect a person whom they deserved.

It puts a damper on much of the rhetoric from the Right today. But I can't help recalling the utter dismay of the air-headed co-ed from Berkeley who was quoted in the Arnold victory stories in the papers earlier today. Something that makes the mindless minions of liberalism so upset cannot be all bad.

Good article. Even though most pundits are using the illegal alien drivers license as the reason for the downfall of Davis, anyone who was standing in line at the DMV on September 30th (as I was) knows the truth.

Sort of reminds me of Margaret Thatchers "Poll Tax" and her subsequent political demise.

One of the Dem's talking points last night was trying to blame California's problems on the nationsl economy which of course they blamed on Bush.

Interesting I remember a thread on FR several months ago that said just the opposite. That California's problems were an impedement to the notional recovery taking off.

"These Schwarzenegger conservatives -- now, there is an oxymoron "

Sort of like the phrase "conservative George Will".

California’s recall -- a riot of millionaires masquerading as a "revolt of the people" -- began with a rich conservative Republican congressman, who could think of no other way he might become governor, financing the gathering of the necessary signatures ...

George has got it wrong. Darrell Issa was a latecomer, and he was one of the earliest to drop out. His money allowed for an October 7 recall, but without him it still would have happened in March.

And a 20-25% approval rating is hardly the doing of a 'riot of millionaires'. Davis and the Democrats slit their own throats.

The put-upon people of California, groaning under the weight of decisions taken by California’s electorate, have repeatedly taken lawmaking into their own hands through initiatives that mandate this and that allocation of resources. So an estimated -- no one seems able to say for sure, which fact says much about the consequences of California populism -- 60 percent to 80 percent of the budget is beyond the control of the governor and Legislature.

He’s got a small point here. Much of our budget problems are our own making. However, the state legislature has been so ridiculously ineffective and held so ridiculously unaccountable for its lack of effectiveness due to hyper-liberal CA media that the electorate is left with no choice but to revolt and initiate laws on their own. Take away the initiative process and NOTHING significant would have been done for the last 30 years.

I blame the media, which is to say I blame liberals.

These Schwarzenegger conservatives -- now, there is an oxymoron for these times -- have embraced a man who is, politically, Hollywood’s culture leavened by a few paragraphs of Milton Friedman. They have given spurious plausibility to a meretricious accusation that Democrats are using to poison American politics, the charge that Florida 2000 was part of a pattern of Republican power grabs outside the regular election process.

Schwarzenegger’s conservative supporters have furled the flag of "family values" while mocking their participation in the anti-Clinton sex posse. They were unoffended by Schwarzenegger’s flippant assertions that only the "religiously fanatic" oppose human cloning -- not just stem cell research but cloning. These faux conservatives’ new hero said that only "right-wing crazies" supported the proposal on Tuesday’s ballot to bar the state from collecting the racial data that fuels the racial spoils system.

Perfect, George.

Perfect.

Cheers, and for a recovery of the Republican Party in CA, sometime in the future,

Richard F.

George Will is highly educated, very smart, and usually right on the money. In this particular instance, however, he doesn't have a clue.

Normally, Will is a strong supporter of obeying the constitution, and of self-decision by states. He misses both boats in this column. The PEOPLE of California decided, as did the PEOPLE of 12 other states, to provide for recall as a legal process of expressing their political will.

History amply demonstrates that the people have used this right (where it exists) very rarely. They have used it only for the exceptional abuses for which it was intended. (The very high petition requirements for any recall are the pragmatic barrier that keeps recalls rare.)

Will is simply dead wrong in this column. It happens.

True enough here in Idaho.

Mr. Will writes that cutting back the car tax will "increase by 50 percent the already $8 billion deficit . . ."

The good news is the increase will be far less than 50 percent. The bad news is, that's because the deficit is closer to $20 billion if I understood Gov. Schwarzenegger's press conference.

Then there's the little matter of the monkey wrench in the state's legislature's plan to borrow billions of dollars -- seems that violates our state constitution, at least according to a recent court decision.

Not to worry. Our new governor said today that he welcomes the "undocumented" workers. No doubt he expects their hard work and tax dollars will get us out of the mess in no time. But, wait -- they'll need drivers' licenses and he's against them for ILLEGAL aliens. oh, nevermind. Arnold plans to work with Senator McCain and make them all legal.

No problem! Or, will that be ¡Ningun problema! from now on?

The new governor is definitely good for the spirit here but. . . .

Re: George has got it wrong.

Yes, that was an insult to all the hundreds of citizens who obtained more signatures than Issa's dollars. Hundred's of thousands were collected before Issa and I believed 500 thousand were collected after the paid workers quit. We went almost a million beyond the required number.

It's worse than wrong it's a lie.
