Advice for the Governor-Elect (Cavuto)
FOX News ^ | 10/08/03 | Neil Cavuto

No sooner had Arnold Schwarzenegger been elected, than someone made this bold prediction: He's going to have to raise taxes.

Why? You're billions in the red, so the only way out of it is billions in new taxes?

Look, I know the guy faces some stark choices. You either cut a lot of programs, or raise a lot of taxes. Why instantly assume you don't do the former, but you do do the latter?

There is only one way to, in one fell swoop, get California out from all the outrageous contracts and perks that the liberal Democrats have gotten the state into. They got the state into bankruptcy...declare bankruptcy.

California is, by any measure, still a very wealthy province. That does not mean that the state government has first priority on the wealth of its citizens. There is a cash flow crisis, not unlike getting overextended on credit cards. Right now, the cash being spent exceeds what is coming in, simple as that. Unilaterally voting in a greater potential cash flow (raising taxes) does not automatically assure a larger revenue stream.

Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Phoenix and even Seattle are the beneficiaries of that policy. Capital, already badly spooked in California, will flee at an even greater pace, and turnaround will be further away than ever.

Austerity has two faces. One is to turn to macaroni and cheese, rather than to continue to demand quiche, and the other is to send out the kids to work at after-school jobs if they want all those wonderful things at the mall. Turn negatives into virtues, by using the resources available. Once the ethic of living at a little less than your means is established, it is positively amazing how fast prosperity returns.

Arnold needs to boldly take his Conan Sword out of mothballs and start slashing. All the while saying "see Mr. President - THIS is how you do it! It's really very easy to ignore the crying if you just try."

"You don't need hundreds of different bilingual programs. Try paring some of them down."

Wrong! We don't need to pare some of them down, we need to eliminate every single one of them.

These programs represent untold amounts of wasted tax dollars.

This is America, and the language of choice in this nation is English. If people don't speak, write, and understand the English language that is not my problem.

The solution is to learn it... or return to your native soil. You will never succeed in this land if you fail to grasp the English language.

Before anyone hands over another penny, look at every penny.

That's half the problem. There's this little thing called "withholding" which prevents all the sheeple from ever noticing the penny. They never missed it, because they never had it to hand over. They never feel the pain of writing the check.

If (R)nold wants another term when this one ends, he won't slash jack.

You don't need road and highway cost construction running at double-digit increases year-in and year-out.

This I doubt. I would like to see Mr. Cavuto's numbers.

Unless I misunderstood your statement, I think one part needs to be corrected. Seattle is hardly a business-friendly city. In fact, the entire state of WA is run by tax-and-spenders.
