As of April 2003:

Among the governors of the fifty states and five territories, there are 28 Republicans, 26 Democrats, and one member of the Popular Democratic Party.

The Republican Party has held a majority of Governorships since 1995. This increases the majority to 29-26-1.

Among the 50 States the count was 26(R) - 24 (D) and is now 27(R) - 23(D).
