Despite intensive lobbying by Russia in recent months, India is moving decisively toward missile defense cooperation with the United States, according to the September 29th edition of Defense News. The paper reports that Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee floated a request for U.S. assistance in the creation of national missile shield “which will be designed to counter growing threats from China and Pakistan” during his September 24th New York meeting with President Bush. In his proposal, Vajpayee agreed to the establishment of an extensive nonproliferation regime, as well as American oversight over New Delhi’s deployment of defenses “a role that could extend to U.S. control over deployed Indian defenses, according to one Indian Ministry of Defence official. “We expect Washington to agree to the proposal, as New Delhi had been one of the few countries to support the national missile defense proposal of President Bush when it was launched in 2001”, the official told Defense News.

India, together with Japan, who had responded to North Korea's nuclear threat and announced earlier that they will develop their own missile defense basing on America's land based system, will at least keep China's expansionism under check.

Which doesn't even count for the new system online slung under the soon to be retired F-15's. I think that W's stand on ABM and anti-sat technology is to be applauded. Especially with Brazil contemplating creating the Latin A-bomb.
