And as always this brings up the big question. What would space flight look like now if so much money and effort hadn't been put into the Apollo program and, more specifically, the "end of the decade" deadline?

I have always thought (hoped?) that the Air Force had a super-secret follow-on to the X-15 program - a satellite killer. Maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.
