Aides said any such move, though taken in the name of national security, could violate the spirit if not the letter of US nondisclosure laws. These privacy rules were first established in the mid-1970s as part of an overhaul of the tax code after the Nixon White House used IRS records to intimidate its enemies.

I remember seeing year after year the IRS spokemen and women screaming that the IRS would NEVER do this.

Now they are doing it.

If the IRS does this, as a byproduct it will give it's opposion more political support in getting rid of the IRS.

Does anyone really think that Hillary & Co. don't have a direct data line and server direct to the IRS database?

Why not let them, since the IRS has more power than any other agency, they might as well share the info. They are gonna get it any way, might as well make it sooner than later.(Sarcasm)

And social security numbers are only for your retirement and won't be used for ID, and we would never use gun registration for any other purpose than to ensure they don't fall into criminal hands, and seatbelts and helmet will never be required to be worn, we just want to make sure they're available to people who wish to use them, and ...

I was implying that the IRS is a terrorist agency.

We've all known that for the past 80 years, since they started using the IRS to go after criminals.

Oh, I thought you were implying that terrorists don't declare their income and therefore wouldn't be in the IRS's database anyway. But your statement is closer to the truth.

What's the FR response to the idea that the IRS is not a branch of the treasurt, but a separate company housed out of Puerto Rico? Do y'all feel that the IRS is a legitimate albeit despicable part of the USGov, or is it far more hideous than that.

Nice to see how easily the conservatives have been rocked to sleep. If this were to happen under a democrat administration, there would be threads every hour to see who was going to bring pitch-forks and who was going to bring torches to the Capital Building. I hope all these fools who think this is ok are going to be happy when the next democrat in the White House turns all of these machines that are currently being built lose on their enemies (umm, that would be US!).

IRS has absolutely no business sharing any information on any citizen to any other agencies.

I might further add that if we have FLAT TAX, IRS would not be even be needed at all.

I agree. Right now, my passport needs renewing. On the back of the form it states explicitly that all info provided on the application will be provided to the IRS. I don't live in the States. I need my passport. I find this sort of thing worrying.

"a committee staff member on the Democratic side. "It would raise eyebrows if the IRS thought they already had administrative authority "

"I hope all these fools who think this is ok are going to be happy when the next democrat.."

Hey, I don't have to await that day to be mighty pissed, so we got Bush in the White House, and his minions Ashcroft, Poindexter, and now this IRS guy are out to screw with us.

Why do we have to rely on Democrats in Congress to protect us from a runaway big government?

Gee, weren't the Republicans against Big Government, but I guess that was BEFORE they got into power.
