Constitutional restrictions on police intrusions should not be ignored just because it makes it impossible for police to do certain things. Those restrictions are there for a reason. Heck, we already ignore some pieces of the Constitution... </sarcasm>
I guess now I'm curious as to what investigators CAN do that doesn't constitute illegal search-and-seizure...

Look at the whole tenor of the Patriot Act.
It was cooking inside the DoJ for years - a wish list of erosions of Constitutional protection. 9/11 was just a trigger to unleash it. To LEAs, the Constitution is the enemy, to be outwitted if possible and used for asswipe if neccessary.
