The union's job is to enlarge it's membership. More members, more power, better negotiating position. Who cares if 3,500 - 800 = 2,700 employees are redundant, under utilized, non-productive, and a drain on the corporation's profitability? They were paying union dues and that's all that matters. Of course those 2,700 employees were there only because management had caved into the union's demands ('job security') over the years. I wonder, as the last truck left the plant and the laid off employees watched the gate close, if they said "Solidarity" in unison one last time.
