My lab doesn't even bark when strangers enter the door -- she barks when they leave!

Gosh, I'm glad ignorance isn't contagious...You people are pathetic spewing ALL the lies and myths the media has told you about pit bulls. Have you even meet a REAL WELL BRED American Pit Bull Terrier before? Wait, let me answer my own question...NO! Why don't you all go read the book Fatal Dog Attacks, which is the TRUTH about dog attacks instead of all the crap the media feeds you. Did you that MIXED breed dogs are usually labeled pit bulls in an attack? I wonder why that would be...BECAUSE IT GETS MORE ATTENTION that just saying mixed breed.

I was attacked by a lab when I was younger. OH NO! Not AMERICA'S SWEETHEART DOG?! NO WAY..it MUST have been a pit bull..NO it wasn't. Should LABS be banned? No, because ANY dog is pontentially dangerous. Grow up and stop pinning the blame on pit bulls. Now I'm going to go hope my brain hasn't shrunk after reading these posts.

"I own 3 pit bull dogs."

Why? Most of the pit bulls that I have seen have the personality of Mike Tyson with PMS.

Of course, all dog breeds will bite given the proper situation. When it comes to biting, I doubt that any breed can match the frequency and severity of the pit bull.

The Media!! Disgusting! I think THEY are doing a lot of the biting just for a story. Just the other day I saw a reporter in a pit bull suit waiting at the school bus stop. Everyone knows Pitbulls are dogs of peace.

So transparent. You two are one in the same. You both sign up on the same day to resurrect an old thread and tell everyone just how ignorant they are. You capitalize whole words for emphasis and use punctuation the same. Why not just use one screen name and stick around and continue the conversation? Chicken Little wants to make it look like there are more than one making your argument? And why not join us on the newer threads, rather than pulling up an eight month old discussion, trying to stir up controversy on old news? Troll!

a REAL WELL BRED American Pit Bull Terrier

Unfortunately they're becoming increasingly rare -- way too many irresponsible backyard breeding operations.

First of all, we are NOT the same. Second of all I wasn't attempting to "resurrect" this discussion. It was posted on a Live Journal community (against BSL) and I checked it out. I was astonished by the sheer stupidity of close minded people and so I posted, not really checking out the date of the discussion.

If you don't like Pit Bulls, don't get one. But when you say that Pit Bulls should be outlawed

I never said I didn't like them, nor did I say they should be outlawed. I merely pointed out that irresponsible backyard breeders are ruining the breed.

You need to settle down newbie, or your ass will outta here fast.

Do you talk politics, or just dogs? If the latter, perhaps you should find a more apprpriate forum to vent your anger.

Hahaha! Funny stuff...I mean really. *rolls eyes* You know what I meant. A lot of dogs that aren't pit bulls are labeled pit bulls by the media. A boxer was labeled a pit bull by the media then they later said...oopsy we bad...it wasn't a pit bull after all, but by then the damage was all ready done...

I'm sorry to say but people CREATED what the pit bull is. It's our own fault for creating a breed we wanted to fight. Pit bulls WOULD be a dog of peace if people would stop breeding them for dog aggression and using them for dog fighting.

I talk politics, but I prefer dogs. Why do you ask? I just get a little wound up sometimes when people seem to believe everything they hear. I probably should have calmed down BEFORE I posted, but I messed up. I'm only human.

Does anyone remember awhile ago when the GSD was the killer dog? And the Rottweiler...and the Doberman...The media throughout the years has always had a certain breed in it's spotlight.

It is very refresing to hear a defender of pitbulls admit that.
Do you know why they are so apt to attack small children? They don't see them as human. They see them as another animal & since they have been bred to fight, their instinct takes over.

I don't know the answer but nothing that has been suggested, other than making them illegal & destroying the breed, would stop the killing and maiming of children. Then the people who want aggressive dogs would just use another breed for the same end.

The other suggestions, fines, jail time etc, would only happen after a tragedy occurs. Because of the aggression they are not a trustworthy breed. Sad but true.

Ditter, While we do not agree I think AT LEAST we can talk civily...I hope. There are more breeds than just pit bulls with high prey drives...Rottwielers are one of these breeds. It is the high prey drive that causes SOME dogs to see children as prey. I KNOW there was an article about this some where. Maybe I could find it and post it here. So do you honestly believe the banning of pit bulls would solve the dog attack problem? I think people would just bring in OTHER breeds to make up for it such as Filas or Tosas or create new ones.

Thanks for the welcome.

I think I stated in my last reply that I do not know the answer to this problem. I still don't. I also stated that if pb's banned people would just turn to other breeds. I still believe that. There is info from gov. entity that records dog bites by breeds. Pb's & Rotts head the last by a large margin, with pb's being first. If I can remember the name I'll find it again & post it. It is not from the media.

So do you believe all pit bulls are vicious or only some? I'm wondering how accurate these bite stats are. I wonder how many of these so-called pit bulls are full blooded American Pit Bull Terriers...

Well I'm off to work for now. Why is it only Tuesday?

I am not an absolutist. I have Jack Russel Terriers that can't jump. (imagine that ha ha) But I have read too many stories where the pitbull owner is "quoted" as saying "he was such a sweet dog, he never bit/killed any child before". I have seen people on the news say the same thing. I think the potential is there because the breed was bred to fight. Please don't get out the dog book & tell me the dog was bred to pull carts or some such. They were originaly bred to bait bulls. My husband currently raises bulls for the rodeo. It would take a strong quick vicious dog to even get the attention of his bulls.

I will not tell you the breed was used to pull carts because that is FALSE and I am not a liar. Although they definately could pull carts. I do know the American Pit Bull Terrier's past. They were bred for bull baiting and dog fighting. Most of these attacks on humans are by badly bred pit bulls bred for money by backyard breeders and NOT temperament.

But what about all the other dog attacks that are not pit bulls? I believe ANY dog can be dangerous in a certain situation. On the dog board I belonged to one person told a story of a Golden Retriever who tore half of a woman's face off. Pit bulls may be powerful, but so are Presa Canarios (the ones that killed the woman in San Francisco). If pit bulls are banned I believe people may turn to this larger breed.

Here is the book I was talking about. I should order and read it. http://www.fataldogattacks.com/
