My Al Kaline/Tigers poster is still on the wall of my room at my folks house since 1968. They still have the Twin Pines milk box on the side of the house. My W4 radio station t-shirt is still in the drawer next to my WRIF "BABY!" t-shirt. And the house is still worth what is was worth in 1974!
The full quote was "I'll give you five pounds of coffee if I can't bet your best deal. The competion knows me, you should too."
How about:
"Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! at Detroit Dragway..."
I wasn't old until I read this thread. Thanks all from an old AVenue prefix kid.

When I was about six, my mom locked herself out of the house. ( we had walked to the drugstore on Woodwards) So she made me climb throught the milk-chute and go around to open the door! Tight fit even for a six year old! LOL!

Speaking of JP McCarthy of WJR, do you remember the tag line "Broadcasting from the golden tower of the fisher building?" I remember Sonny Elliot taking the "Horn" off the top of the Michigan map, and making a squeeking noise when mentioning the temperature of some tiny UP town (Most likely make up) with a name like "Moose Butt" or something similar. I remember the advertisements for Towne CLub's line of soft drinks. I remember having a Red Wings poster that said "The Ice Men Cometh" at the top of three cartoonish players drawn in red ink. I moved to Texas in 1975, and this list was a real blast from the past.
To: rico loco
"from the golden tower of the Fisher Building" is a great line. Sonny Elliott scared the crap out of me when I was a kid by taking off the top of the UP from the map. Don't know why, but it gave me the willies.
Towne Club was a bargain for families that drank a lot of pop. My aunt & uncle used to get these huge boxes(not bags) of Better Maid potato chips -- always wondered how they did that.
Too bad you moved in '75 -- I think you missed one of the worst Dead Wings(I'm old enough to remember that moniker) slogans of the bad old years -- Aggressive Hockey is Back in Town. I think Ted Lindsay was the coach for that debacle.
To: Always Right
Yeah, but for the last 20 years they have been the worst team in baseball with no real competition. Twenty years ago (1984) the Tigers were world champions.

And who watched "Sir Graves Ghastley" for REALLY cheesy horror movies on Saturday afternoon?I will NEVER forget his drag show as Tillie, singing "Rats in my Room!"
What's even more scary is my grandmother heard it once and sang it as she cleaned. LOL!

You are probably thinking of Tashmoo Park on Harsens Island. You must be a real "old timer" to remember that. I think it has been closed for at least 50 years. The island opposite it that belongs to a tribe of indians is called Wapole Island; it is in Canada.
To: Edmund Burke
Bless you Edmund and thank you. Of course, Tashmoo Park
and Walpole Island across the channel. Couldn't remember
to save me!
It was a long time ago - didn't realize it has been closed
for 50 years. I remember, as a little kid, swimming
right out in front of a cottage where you could see
the ore freighters sail by. We always tried to find
some "wake" from the ship.
Thanks again for bringing back memories!

While cleaning out an old wallet last year, found my gold DREAD card in it.
My wife has never been to Detroit and just can't relate so this is a good little web page. I really enjoy it! Haven't been back in over ten years hope to someday, just for the food!!!!

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but I watched an amazing documentary last night on PBS about Hank Greenberg...apparently the first jewish player in the Major leagues in the late 30's. I'm sorry to say thats the first i've ever heard of him. He came back after serving 4 years in WW2 and picked up right where he'd left. An amazing story and an amazing man.

I didn't see anybody mention:
-Carol Duvall (Timely Tips for Today's Modern Living)
-Jingles in Boothland (with Cecil B. Rabbit and Herkimer (sp?) Dragon
-Christmas Carol at the Hudson's Xmas Parade
-These old Tigers: Jake Wood, Billy Bruton, Norm Cash, or Don Wert
I left Detroit in March of 1985. My last Tiger game at the old stadium was Game 4 of the 1984 World Series.
My favorite memory from that last year was driving home on Friday nights from my job in Troy to my house in Canton. Crawling along in the heavy traffic of the Southfield Freeway but hearing Arthur P. scream "It's the weekend!!!" and launching into Ted's rendition of "Weekend Warriors"

WAIT!!
That's Cleveland.
It's funny, I lived in Cleveland until 1996. I had someone send me one of these for Detroit. <<<
"The Ghoul" is BOTH -- he's Ron Sweed, native of Cleveland, who went to Channel 50 (WKBD) in Detroit to host horror shows as "The Ghoul," competition to "Sir Graves Ghastly" in the early 1970s. He later took the show to Cleveland, where I've heard he's still on ... ?

Hi,
Yeah, fortunately most people don't remeember that certain Gordon Lightfoot song, "Black July". I personally love Gord's music; but that one song is particularly ominous and dark, for obvious reasons. I was 12 in 1967; it was a very scary time. Mr. Lightfoot managed to put to music what was a horrible, gut-wrenching period for all of us Detroiters.
Yeah, that song still makes me feel rotten, for all of us who were there in that awful summer of '67; the "summer of love", elsewhere in our country.
Thankfully, we have moved on- hopefully, that mentality will continue.
To: tiamat
I thought the coolest thing Sir Graves Ghastly did was when he would draw a "face" on his chin, they would film his head upside-down and he would lip-synch Beatles songs.
That was really out there !
I'm 51 now, but there must be a couple of people who remember Sgt. Sacto and his crew (I can't remember their names- middle age- lol) on channel 50 in the afternoons. When his crew would acknowledge him, they would make a fist, extend their right arm out straight and pull their fist into their chest 3 times, thereby doing a "triple pumper". My buddies and I would do that and it cracked us up !
Milky the Clown still creeps me out...
