Free Republic's 9-11 100 Hours of Remembrance
Free Republic | 9/6/03 | Free Republic

Posted on 09/06/2003 1:45:49 AM PDT by jriemer

It’s 4:46am September 6.

Its a little more than 100 hours from the Second Anniversary of Start the World Trade Center Attack and the subsequent Strike on the Pentagon and the Crash in Pennsylvania. 100 hours seems to be a long time; however, it is barely enough to reflect and remember all those who perished on the ground and in the air. Each one of the victims has a story, a life, that if retold would take more than 100 hours to appreciate the richness of their stay on this earth before it was snatched away.

Since 911, there has been more sacrifice. More have taken from this earth – this time not in tragedy but in a quest for justice and the expansion of freedom. They were not helpless victims but Heroes of liberation for the Afghanis and Iraqis and protectors of our domestic security.

We would hope that you would take the time and reflect on the lives of those who died on 9-11 and those who have sacrificed their all since that day in these next 100 hours. Please contribute a post of reflection, a prayer, a memorial, a picture or even just a ping to your friends to let them know that 9-11 has not been ignored this year.

Never forget…

Thank you the beautiful picture with the reflection of the WTC in the water.I have just listened to the mother and dad of a young firefighter lost on the 19thfloor of WTC.

I remember the pain in the faces of surviving firefighters with sootstained faces walking away realizing that they could do nothing more to save their fallen brothers and sisters.

I WILL NEVER FORGET!

This is just four of the people I knew that lost their lives that day.

Thomas A. Hobbs, 41, Baldwin, N.Y., USA

Kevin James Hannaford, 32, Basking Ridge, N.J., USA

Martin Michael Wortley, 29, Park Ridge, N.J., USA and His Story

Frank J. Spinelli, 44, Short Hills, N.J., USA

May God protect their families and watch over their souls.

My previous post of the links did not work (damn smart quotes). Although these are lives most people would never know about if not for 9/11, I hope you can take the time to remember them in your prayers.

I work in Manhattan about two miles north of where the WTC used to stand. Needless to say, that day and the weeks and months that followed were horrible.

I cannot properly convey the images and smells that I, and all NY's, were confronted with, it was very painful, very emotional.

Two days after that tragic day I penned the following note to a British Newspaper; It is as follows:

To Whom it may Concern:

I don't know where to start, but I'll try. I work in New York, just north of the disaster in lower Manhattan. The last few days have been hell for most of us. I’ve never felt such grief, such utter despair. I believe most of us have felt detached, not truly knowing whether the rest of the world understands our tremendous sense of loss.

As I dressed for work this morning I saw Prime Minister Tony Blair and the British House of Commons live on C-SPAN. I listened to speaker after speaker profess their support for America. CSPAN replayed the scene from Buckingham Palace during the Changing of the Guard yesterday. I was incredibly moved by the obvious grief stricken faces of those British subjects who attended the ceremony.

I sat in my living room and thought about my 7 year old daughter and the world she will be inheriting. Tuesday changed everything. My generations’ calling has been sounded. I sat and cried, for what is to come will be very painful and full of severe sacrifices. Many, many more Americans will die over the next few years. But history will judge our legacy on how we respond to this challenge; we cannot and will not fail.

So as I walked out of the house this morning, into the rain, I realized Americas hour has come. I also realized we our not alone. Prime Minister Blair referred to us as cousins. So cousins, thank you for the support.

Sincerely, ##### ####### (Long Island, New York)

I remember that day vividly.

I got to work around 8am and logged onto FR to get the early morning news. About an hour later, I noticed the first thread about a plane crashing into the WTC. Roughly fifteen minutes later when the next plane hit, I knew my work day was over.

I suddenly remembered my brother had a flight out of Newark that morning to Richmond. My gut instinct told me he was okay but I wanted to verify that by talking to him. I didn't want to call his wife because I had no idea whether she was aware of what was going on in New York and since I didn't want to alarm her I called Michael's cell phone. When he didn't pick up I left a voice message telling him to call me immediately when he got this message. Some time later, my brother called and you can imagine how thrilled I was to hear his voice. I explained what was going on in New York (he couldn't believe it), told him all flights were grounded and to call his wife as soon as he hung up with me. He cut his business meeting in Richmond short, rented a car and drove the five hours back up to NJ.

Meanwhile, I was working in a small office at the time and as the day wore on everyone left to go home. I had to stay because of a doctor's appointment later that day. Unfortunately, our office didn't have a television but thankfully I was kept informed throughout the day via Free Republic.

My brother, who frequently does business in Manhattan, surprisingly and thankfully didn't lose any friends in the attacks. However, my sister-in-law (his wife) lost a cousin who was a fire fighter in the disaster. He was married and I believe left behind at least one child. Very sad.

One more thing, my cousin Anthony who lives in NJ was in Manhattan that day. I don't know exactly where in Manhattan but--he was unaffected physically by the attacks--since he takes public transportation over to the city he was unable to get back to Jersey and ended up spending the night there. It's funny, I've seen him since then but I've never thought to ask him about it. I'm seeing him this weekend so now that it's fresh in my mind I'll have to ask him about it.
