Years ago I was stuck in one of Boston's Storrow Drive's massive traffic jams along the Charles River. These things often last for hours because too-tall truck drivers don't read the low bridge warnings.
I'm falling asleep in the passing lane when I notice something big and red moving in my rear mirror.
A little funny looking red car pulled off the road onto the shore. I thought the car was overheating or something. But that casual observance turned to horror as the red car didn't stop on the grass but kept going straight into the water. And then my assumption was wrong again because, to my surprise, I wasn't witnessing an accident.
I was witnessing a really excellent use for an amphibious car that got out of a jam by crossing the Charles and going to Cambridge.

I have twice witnessed cars drive right down the boat ramp and into the water at the Ala Wai Marina. One a rented jeep, the other a rented convertible. Down the ramp and right to the bottom both of 'em. The tourists in the convertible took off. The ones in the Jeep stuck around to argue with the rental car agent about having to pay for the damages. They were really bent when the Coast Guard showed up and told them about the fine for polluting the harbor.

I remember the first time I saw that car cruising down the Charles River. Haven't seen it around Cambridge in years. There's another car that hangs out here, a Miata painted black and white like a cow. Has a horn that sounds like a cow mooing. We call it a Mooata.
