I believe the $9.4M was the amount they asked for. The award was reduced to $1.2M to reflect Terri's attributable negligence, it says. I had read that she was bulimic.

Excerpt from your link:

November 1992 – A medical malpractice trial is petitioned by Terri's husband, Michael Schiavo. He asks the jury for 20 million dollars to pay for his wife’s (Terri) future medical and neurological requirements. This request was based on estimates of her life expectancy, which Michael Schiavo and his attorneys were estimating at 50 years.

Ok, so they asked for $20 million but were awarded only $9.4 million for malpractice, but then reduced it to $1.2 million because of her negligence? Is this correct? I guess I still don't understand the way they award $ in these cases.

Michael may not be going for the money, but he sure isn't wanting to be in jail for spousal abuse!
