California has always had its wackiness, though today's wack jobs are emboldened by the media and politicians, who in a previous era would have laughed and walked away, rather than dignify the loonies "activism".

California has its own, home grown, SOB's. I think you are definitely correct about the media. It has stifled sincere, honest debate with meaningless sound bites that confuse the issues, or worse, slants them toward the opinion editors of the LAT.
