Crack house run out of Habitat for Humanity home, say police (Where's Jimmy Carter now?)

Muncie, Aug. 22 - Police say they'd been watching the house for six months. They raided it Wednesday. Thursday night a fire broke out and caused substantial damage. Investigator's call it suspicious.

Investigators say the fire started in the bedroom near a closet.

A day earlier the Delaware County SWAT team raided the house, taking away drugs and cash.

The drug task force arrested homeowner Gloria Williams and her brother Eddie. Prosecutors charged Eddie with dealing cocaine. They plan to charge Gloria with the same offense soon.

In 1999 Gloria Williams closed on her home, one built like thousands of others each year with donations and the sweat of volunteers as well as families who need a helping hand.

Delaware County Deputy Prosecutor Mark McKinney says, "It's a shame Habitat for Humanity has been used."

A spokesman for Habitat for Humanity in Georgia called the situation unfortunate.

To be selected for a Habitat home, Williams would have had to show need and be actively involved in the construction, what's called sweat equity. In turn she received a 20-year zero interest loan.

How many posts before somebody here says this is Jimmy Carter's fault. Since I'm the first one posting, I'll say 4.

Carter wondered why the Williams requested a bank teller window at the side of the home, but installed one anyhow, noting "It's the right thing to do. Besides, I'm a moron".

My brother-in-law is a bankruptcy shyster in the Tacoma, Washington area. He's handled 3 Habitat clients this year in chapter 7 proceedings.

Jimmy Carter and fault in the same sentence? Everyone knows that Saint Jimmy has no faults-just ask Jimmy if you don't believe it.

Most of these families are high risk - no one denies that. Is there anything wrong with the community in which they live giving them a chance of successful homeownership?

They build these houses in the worst areas. I'm surprised we don't hear about this more often.

The pathetic thing is, most people would kill for a 20 year zero interest loan and all these losers can think of doing is ripping off the system and screwing up. And I am sure they vote Democrat, because they feel entitled to more than they are already getting.

Well, these people were successful homeowner - they got a home and maintained it, to a degree - it's what they did with that home that is the subject here.

I don't believe that was the case with Bigfootbob, to whom I responded. Even so, most of the people on this thread seem to be attacking the program or the people associated with the program rather than these peeps who screwed up.

As much as I despise Jimmy Carter, it's ridiculous to even consider him accountable. These morons blew it. They were given a chance and they blew it.

It's sort of like giving a gun to someone who has no training. It's like giving someone a car and insurance, when he has no clue what he is doing.

It takes a certain amount of ambition, hard work, education, common sense, and knowledge about finance to own a home.

If you just give someone a home who is lacking one or more of these qualities, in the long run, most of these people will lose their homes, their homes will not be kept up, and in the end, this will not be a wise use of resources.

It's why most criminals end up back in prison, it's why most drug treatment fails, it's the way things are.

If you look at their website, you'll see they do make an effort to educate their clients.

I donated to Habitat for Humanity once, but that was before Carter went to Cuba and kissed up to Castro. There's no way I'll ever donate to them again, even though I still get fundraising letters from them once in a while.
