Pancakes on Wednesdays
Yes, we now have banana pancakes....

Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Wednesday August 20, 2003

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

EDACIOUS

Relating to eating.

That, at least, is the literal sense of the word, since it comes from the Latin verb edere, to eat. But even in Latin it had a stronger sense of voracious consumption and that was carried with it into English. It was brought into the language—surprisingly recently—by classically educated writers at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It never really caught on and is now almost extinct, perhaps because voracious is a better established and more vigorous-sounding alternative. The Roman writer Ovid created a maxim in his Metamorphoses: “Tempus edax rerum.” time devours everything. As a result, in its rare appearances the word is most likely to be linked with time. Thomas Carlyle used it in this way when he referred to events “swallowed in the depths of edacious time.”

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Some sad news posted last night in the Canteen by Texas Cowboy.

"Dear friends, I just got the call that I've been dreading, but expecting.

My sis died at about midnight Texas time. God has taken her home.

She devoted the last twenty-five years of her life to caring for the needs
of veterans in the VA Hospitals in San Antonio,
and I know many of them are welcoming her into heaven right now.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

I'll be going to San Antonio to take care of her final business.
May God bless you all."

These are two of the many links in the USO Canteen Post Office.

The Blue Star Mothers now have an area on their forum
where people can send messages to our troops.
They are printed by families and placed in care packages and letters.
These messages can go to any area where our troops are located.

Good Morning Radix! More Waffles Please!!!!Good morning to our military and good morning to the whole Canteen crew.

Warm up exercise for today . . . . .

Would you like another cup?

A sweet little boy surprised his grandmother one morning and brought her a cup of coffee. He made it himself and he was so proud. The young lad anxiously waited to hear the verdict on the quality of the coffee.

The grandmother had never in her life had such a bad cup of coffee, and as she forced down the last sip she noticed three of those little green army guys in the bottom of the cup.

She asked her grandson, "Honey, why would three little green army guys be in the bottom of my cup of coffee?"

Her grandson proudly replied, "You know Grandma, it's like on TV. 'The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup.'"
