August 18, 2003 -- WE'LL bag Saddam. We'll continue to break down the diehard support for the old regime. And we'll do our best to give the people of Iraq a chance at greater freedom than they've ever known. But even when the last Ba'athist bullies are rounded up and foreign terrorists tire of achieving martyrdom at our hands, one mighty enemy will remain in Iraq: Ignorance.

We can't rebuild Iraq in a day. Changing a culture based on fear, ignorance, and lies is a decades long endeavor. When all is said and done for all our recent setbacks, we're still on track.

We have our own problems with the inability to determine fact, wishful thinking, and fantasy. Just consider the OldDominantLiberalMedia, or visit DU.

I'm glad that I am not in charge of deciding when our task in Iraq is finished. It's one thing to overthrow a tyrannical dictator. Quite another to fill the vacuum with a democratic government when the populace doesn't understand the principles it is based on.

True. Either it'll happen or it won't. One way or another we'll be out of there within a year.

Iraq has no tradition of rational inquiry.

If that is so, then the French and the Germans have denied Iraq the use of their most important export: armies of philosophers. There are American philosophers, but just try to pry them off their department chairs.
