LaVerkin, UT – A small southern Utah community has gained international notoriety from its campaign to become a United-Nations-Free Zone.
Now, the LaVerkin city councilman who started that campaign has published a book revealing a truly astounding belief about the U.N.
But a prominent historian says the real worry is that 1950s style "conspiracy theories" are gaining momentum in our X-files generation.
The United Nations may have some image problems lately. But most people will have real trouble swallowing Al Snow's theory.
He thinks the U.N. is conducting a campaign of mass murder by spraying poison into the atmosphere. Is LaVerkin's chief anti-UN crusader onto something? Or is he seeing boogeymen under the bed?
Al Snow believes in the Red, White & Blue. And in a seemingly UN-believable threat from the blue sky.
Al Snow: "Well, today's a good day for you guys to be here because there's lots of chemtrails in the sky."
Most people would call them con-trails. Or vapor-trails.
But LaVerkin city councilman Al Snow says these trails are different. They spread out for hours and fill the sky. He says they are Chemical Trails sprayed almost every day by strange aircraft.
Al Snow: "They're all silver with no insignia or no number. Or they're all white. Or they're all white with a red tail."
In his new book, "Chemtrails: Death in the Sky," he claims the aircraft are spreading barium powder. He thinks it's likely they're trying to kill millions of people. His book asks the question, "Is the United Nations doing the spraying?"
Al Snow: "I think they are, yeah. I think they are. But I want people to think about it and make up their own mind."
"Chemtrails" are the latest in a half-century saga of bizarre, mostly discredited UN conspiracy theories.
Historian Robert Goldberg has studied and written about conspiracy theories. They persist, he says, even without evidence, because they give people a sense of power.
Robert Goldberg/ Professor, University of Utah History Dept.: "The people who claim conspiracy theories picture themselves as latter-day Paul Revere's. That is, 'The people are asleep and the danger is close by. If only we can awaken the American people.' Then the danger can be set aside."
Al Snow is a sort of LaVerkin Paul Revere.

Escalante, UT – A LaVerkin City Councilman is leading a local fight against the United Nations, believing the U.N. is deliberately murdering millions of people by spraying poison from high altitudes. The belief is surprisingly widespread. And a woman in Escalante is also trying to sound the alarm.
Most people think the poisoning theory is nothing but silly paranoia. KSL thinks it's newsworthy because it helps explain the origins of the anti-UN movement in LaVerkin, which gained worldwide attention. The city councilman who wrote the anti-UN ordinance is part of a small but persistent group of true believers.
From her basement office, Toni Thayer believes she's fighting back against what I the most monstrous crime in history, if her beliefs are true that there's a United Nations plot to dominate the world.
Toni Thayer, Escalante: “They also intend to eliminate two-thirds of the human population.”
Like LaVerkin City Councilman Al Snow, she believes vapor-trails behind mysterious high-flying aircraft are actually a poison spray, that it's a campaign of mass murder on an unprecedented scale.
Toni Thayer, Escalante: “It is. And it’s time for Americans to wake up. It’s time for us to stand up in unison.”
She's created a poster presentation on the theory. In the Garfield County newspaper, she's published front-page articles. She has her own web-page. The Chemtrails theory has bounced around on the Internet and radio talk-shows for several years. Thayer claims up to 2,000 hits per day on her website, including many from government agencies.
Toni Thayer: “The US Navy was one of the top three visitors in May.”
Historian Robert Goldberg has studied and written about many similar, discredited, conspiracy theories by people opposed to the U.N.

He worries that conspiracy thinking over the last 50 years has hurt the political system.

We're in here to help defend this nation. What's the excuse for looking the other way when there are unknown chemical additives in jet fuel that may or may not be getting released for some unannounced motive? It wouldn't be the first time that we were lab rats. Just ask anyone who participated in the above ground nuclear weapons tests.
Or, just continue to believe everything you are told. Your choice. I'm not trying to get into any conspiracy BS - read what I wrote. And grow up.

Personally, I think the increase in mortality rates due to undiagnosed respiratory illnesses during the past five years is what the participating nations would probably term, 'acceptable collateral damage.' I'm ready to believe that the world-wide aerial chemical aerosol saturation program is a weather control program, whereas Rep. Kucinich refers to them as exotic weapons.
Al Snow: "The elitists have said we need to eliminate 350.000 people a day until we get back to the 1.5 billion, and that's what the earth can sustain."Who are those elitists pushing for mass murder?
Al Snow: "Jacques Cousteau is one of them."
And who's dying?
Al Snow: "People over 70 years of age, okay? People with emphysema, with asthma and respiratory problems."
You've convinced me, it's a dastardly intrigue, right enough!

So why aren't they concentrating their efforts on Florida, Arizona and the Las Vegas area?
