Serb Gets Life For War Crimes

(AP) The U.N. war crimes tribunal sentenced a prominent Bosnian Serb politician to life imprisonment Thursday for exterminating and persecuting Bosnian Muslims, but acquitted him of genocide.

It was the first time in the court's 10-year history that a life sentence was passed.

Milomir Stakic, a 41-year-old doctor, was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity for establishing a network of brutal prison camps where hundreds of Muslims were killed and thousands tortured, raped or treated with extreme brutality in 1992.

“Dr. Milomar Stakic is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment,” said Judge Wolfgang Schomburg, reading the verdict as Stakic stood, looking stunned. The court said he would be eligible for parole in 20 years.

Although it has never been imposed before, Schomburg said the maximum penalty was “not restricted to the most serious crime” of genocide.

It was the third time the court has handed down an acquittal of genocide charges, the most serious crime to come before the court and the hardest to prove. The court has convicted only one person, Bosnian general Radislav Krstic, of genocide.

The balding, bearded Stakic had faced two counts of genocide and six counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes for the murder, rape and torture administered in the camps set up in the Prijedor region of northwestern Bosnia during the summer of 1992.

The outcome was being watched closely for its possible influence on the war crimes trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, who also faces two counts of genocide among the 66 charges against him.

Without referring to the Milosevic case, however, the judge said the genocide ruling applied only to Stakic and should not mean another trial cannot reach another conclusion when presented with other evidence.

To prove genocide, the prosecution must prove a prior intent to destroy an ethnic group wholly or in part.

The Milosevic trial has been adjourned until Aug. 25 because of concerns about his health.

The court said that as the top administrator of the Prijedor region, Stakic was responsible for the atrocities committed there.

He presided over establishment of two notorious detention centers where thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Croats were held captive until international exposure forced the Serbs to close them.

Stakic's indictment listed specific incidents of murder and brutality, such as the killing of 120 people taken in two buses from the Keraterm and Omarska camps in August 1992, the month the camps were closed.

Stakic has been at the tribunal's detention unit since he was handed over by Serb authorities in March 2001. In the seven months of hearings that ended last April, 101 witnesses testified.

Stakic claims he was a “marionette” in Bosnian Serb wartime politics and had no real power.

But the court ruled that he actively carried out his duties as president of the Prijedor administration, signing orders that perpetuated hatred of non-Serbs and assisting military campaigns of “ethnic cleansing” of tens of thousands of civilians.

By conservative estimate, more than 20,000 people were deported from the Prijedor region as part of a policy of ethnic cleansing, the judge said.

Both sides will have two weeks to file an appeal of the judgment by the three-member panel of judges. The U.N. tribunal cannot impose the death penalty.

In the only previous conviction of genocide by the Yugoslav court, Krstic was sentenced to 46 years in prison for his role in the July 1995 killings of at least 7,500 Bosnian Muslims in the enclave of Srebrenica, then a U.N. protected zone.

Until Thursday, Krstic's was the longest sentence imposed by the court.

The court's two most-wanted suspects, former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and wartime military commander Ratko Mladic, were also indicted on genocide charges for the massacres.

Tell me again how this differs from the horrors of the Holocaust, besides the number of victims???

These 3 monsters (Milosevic, Stakic, Krstic), as well as Mladic and Karadzic, should rot in hell, where they surely belong.

Destro- it's funny how you always seem to scoup up this region's stories before nearly everyone else, but when it's related to these type of stories, you're eerily silent... hmmmm...

The UN courts are shams, especially the kangaroo ICYU tribunal that has been torturing Milosevic for the last yr and a half.

IMO Stakic did not have his day in a real court, and until then I'd reserve judgement.

What stories? It is like saying Stalin's trials were fair and the verdicts just. The UN is not a true court and I disdain its authority and its verdicts.

The numbers are rubbish by the way. They are based on hearsay evidence provided by the Muslims.

The Serbs needed detention centers where to put captured enemy soldiers. What's so unusual about that? If civilians actually were murdered then I don't have a problem with this guy being thrown in prison, but I am curious what kind of evidence he was convicted on.

I still think Serbs should all be tried in Serbia and nowhere else. What country wouldn't have a problem with its citizens being tried by foreigners?

Serbia sets up its own war crimes court to try Serbs accused of war crimes

>>>>>Tell me again how this differs from the horrors of the Holocaust, besides the number of victims???<<<<

NYCR, are you seriuous or this is rhetorical question?

1. Prior to 1933 Jews did not plan nor advertise to exterminate Germans. Bosnian Muslims did plan to exterminate Serbs before 1992. "THE FOURTH REICH IS COMING" read a headline on Bosnian Muslim magazine cover with cartoon of Muslim carrying severed Serb head in his hands. In court ruling of ICTY's sister court, ICTR, similar cartoon was ruled to be public incitement to commit genocide. KIlling Serbs by severing their head was very common afterwards.

2. During HOLOCAUST (1933-45) Jews did not operate Extermination camps for Germans. Bosnian Muslims and Croats operated more than 250 detention and extermination camps for Serbs during Balkan war. Some of them continued to exist even after Deyton peace accords.

3. During HOLOCAUST 6 milion were starved, incinerated and gassed in extermination camps. Bosnian Muslims were not gassed, incinerated and starved to death.

5. BERGEN BELSEN was for real. Trnopolje was a hoax. Yet, all the media reported without blinking "BELSEN IN BOSNIA". Pictures were fakes. One of the best examples of Holocaust revisionism so far.

6. German Jews did not receive weapons and terrorist training to kill Germans. Bosnian Muslims did receive weapons and terrorist training to kill Croats and Serbs. Percentage of population loss is approximatelly the same for Muslims (14%) and Serbs (12%) Genocide, indeed.

7. Germans made extermination of the Jews an official policy of the Third Reich( Wansee protocol). There was no official policy to exterminate Bosnian Muslims in RS .

8. Bosnian Muslims fought on the side of Bosnian Serb Army (BSA/VRS). They even had their own units (e.g. Mesha Selimovich unit). Bosnian Muslim Politician Fikret Abdic Babo coordinated activities with Bosnians Serbs. No such activity existed between Jews and the Third Reich.

And so on. Holocaust is an unique event in human history. Attempt to relate Holocaust to dissimilar event which is different in nature, content and magnitude is HOLOCAUST REVISIONISM.

Allzuklar. Just because certain Muslims acted against their own best interest doesn't make the number of exterminated Muslims fewer. OR THE MURDERERS ANY LESS CULPABLE.

German Jews also did not outnumber the Germans, and have more armed men than the Germans. Weren't the Muslim forces significantly larger than the Serb forces? Do you have the numbers for the respective armies? The German Jews didn't fight, together with an invading army of a neighboring country, against the Germans. Croatia had its army brigades in Bosnia throughout Bosnian war.

Your post #14 is so full of lies, misrepresentation, and hyperbole, it's not even worth commenting on... Like your comment about the Serbs not starving the Bosnians... Like you didn't see the images of the concentration camps, where the Bosnians were thin as a rail, malnourished... Of course, comparing any two events will find similarities, so your arguments are baseless... The comparisons are all there for all to see... Milosevic wasn't hell bent on world domination, just the whole of what was Yugoslavia. He used ethnic cleansing, murders, you name it... Srebrenica is a perfect example...

It's a disgrace for anyone to keep sticking up for these monsters. History will judge them for what they were. Murderers of mass proportion.

You ever heard of Naser Oric and what he and his soldiers did to the Serbs in the Srebrenica area?
