Get fusion power on-track, Don't bother waiting for fusion. Use americium-242m which is 100 times as powerful as plutonium. Look it up sometime on google. Search for "Two weeks to Mars".

True enough. Why point is that VASIMR relies on power input to create thrust, and that's pretty much it. The more power you have, the more stuff you can move faster.
