The main feature of this new system [of admissions]: a beefy portion of credit allotted for a category entitled “life challenges.” The definition of “life challenges”: “a wide range of personal, family or psychological obstacles,” among them “immigration hardships, living in a high-crime neighborhood [and] having been a victim of a shooting.”

Looks like Uday and Qusay will not only be voting in Chicago this fall, but they'll be going to college in California.

But I'm disappointed that both of you seem to think I'll adapt to college, rather than it to me.

Alec, I don't believe you will be so easily misled as other college-bound students might be. Your writing indicates that you will do your own thinking as new information enters your scope of awareness. Our public schools have deliberately tried to condition students to reject their own analysis of information, and to accept the politically correct interpretation.

You shouldn't expect a college to change, at least not in the direction of reason and judgement. Academic corruption is more entrenched than government corruption, and will be much less susceptible to attempted reforms.

I believe a college degree will continue to be an added value to a resume, but the college experience itself will be less significant in the future endeavors for the student. Being vocally conservative on campus will cost a student time and money, and will result in repetition of some courses that rightly should have been a breeze.

Alas, you have already developed the unseemly habit of calling a spade a spade. Good luck.

Great article, Alec, and thanks for the ping, Cathryn! I'm so glad we have you bright, well-spoken young conservatives coming along!

Here's my Old Lady Advice for the day - don't get discouraged when you think FReepers are giving you a hard time - we're not nearly as hard on you as the liberals who disagree will be, and we'll help you hone your arguments and debating skills -- or at least give you thick skin so you can stand the other insults!

Best of luck to both of you. :-)

Incredibly well written.
Mr. Mouhibian, you know you will do well where ever you end up going to college. (I'm a doctor who went to junior college and a small upper level college, so I'm biased on this.)
I hope you keep your passion and reasoning skills honed. Don't forget to get an education while in college, rather than just a degree.

Yikes.

I am sooooooo very grateful that I don't attend university or college anymore! I couldn't handle it. No way.

Thank goodness, many classes are online now. I've decided to expand my "academia" recently, and online courses are the only way to go, IMHO. Less enduring of the socialistic rantings of some "progressive" (i.e. stuck in the 60's red diper doper baby socialist).
