If the U.S. were to reinstate the draft and you were called up, would you go?

Heck no, I wouldn't go!!!
54 votes : 24%

Probably not
16 votes : 7.1%

I'd be ambivalent about the idea
6 votes : 2.7%

I would look for some way out of it but would go if I had to
53 votes : 23.6%

I would do whatever my country asked of me
96 votes : 42.7%

(As of 9:18 pm tonight.)

I was shocked at how many people say they flat-out wouldn't serve if things get to the point where we need a draft. I don't think nearly that percentage refused to go to 'Nam...and the Vietnamese hadn't blown up a WTC.

We're in Oklahoma. What would the results of such a survey be in Berkeley?

I think it is news, though it isn't an "article" as such.

I would go, in a flash! Even at age 56.

I didn't doubt it of you! Most FReepers value their honor.

(Whether they believe a draft is a moral thing is another matter, but if called, they'll serve, not hide.)

Well, it happened to my Dad and he didn't go. Of course, the Department of the Army might have been a little irritated if he had - he was a Major at the time...

I'm 56 too.

I already went.

If it's my turn again, that's OK by me.

I am surprized to see that 66% said they would go, some reluctantly.

Most Americans don't realise that Europe has an almost universal draft.

Many countries REQUIRE you to remain in the reserves until age 50, and some require you to maintain your weapons and ammunition at home.

In Vietnam I dodged the draft by enlisting in the Navy. If they had been willing to take a guy on the far side of fifty i would have reupped Sept. 12, 2001. But they don't have much use for someone out so many years.

It's the University of Oklahoma. But the professors are almost uniformly liberal, especially outside the hard sciences, and many have been doing their damndest to penalize patriotic sentiment whenever they can.

(Some liberal professors here are capable of fairly evaluating a conservative student.)

Nothing new. Same back in the Vietnam era. Lots either avoided the draft or got cushy assignments through influence. Most did not actually want to go. Even those who stood up to be counted - most were not enthusiastic. But - when the rubber hits the road - then those who did served their country. I respect those who did not take the easy way out. Democracy has a price.

Key Tapper - agreed. It is one of the measures i use to judge a person. not the only one. Where were you when you were needed. Did you behave honorably. Or did you bob and weave and skip out on responsibility.

Cowardice is actively cultivated by the left. Only a complacent herd can be led by a global shepard.

As for me? After reading about the freedom movement rising in Southern China, I was wondering this didnt happen when I was young, single and looking to raise hell...

Considering this is a university where, as in most universities, the liberal agenda reigns supreme, 65% is not too bad.

Oklahoma......Long live America's heartland!
