Already hit hard when its codirector William J. Bennett was exposed as a compulsive gambler after earning (and losing) millions from his Book of Virtues, Empower America's other codirector, free marketeer Jack Kemp, now has been revealed by the Washington Times as beneficiary of a billion-dollar deal with the state-owned Venezuelan oil company.
Why Kemp? The deal was done to bolster Venezuela's Castroite president, Hugo Chavez, in the middle of a strike by anticommunist oil workers seeking to bring down the Marxist regime. The Kemp story so saddened the conservative editors of the Times that they ran it on page 14.
And, speaking of journalistic placement, the new executive editor of the New York Times, Bill Keller, is another left-wing opinionater - author of a recent column headlined "God and George W. Bush," demanding to know: "Is President Bush a religious zealot or does he just pander to that crowd?"
Keller was picked for his new job by Times publisher Arthur "Pinch" Sulzburger Jr. How far to the left is "Pinch," son of former publisher Arthur "Punch" Sulzburger?
According to insider Ann Coulter in her dynamite new book, Treason: Liberal Treachery From the Cold War to the War on Terrorism, he was asked by the senior Sulzburger in the 1970s who he would want to see shot if an American soldier came face-to-face with a North Vietnamese soldier. Pinch replied: "I would want to see the American guy get shot. It's the other guy's country."
Insiders all over Washington are reading the Coulter book and the new Dick Morris book, Off With Their Heads, sometimes so excited that they say they are reading them at the same time by alternating chapters between the two.
Try this one from the Wall Street Journal: "U.S. traffic deaths rose to 42,815 in 2002, the most in 12 years, but injuries fell due to safer vehicles and more [seat] belt use, the government said." Let's see, thanks to government-mandated auto safety, fewer of us are being injured and more killed. Sounds like the government, all right.
Under the new campaign-finance rules the House Democratic campaign committee raised about $14.1 million in the first six months of this year, while the Republican congressional campaign committee raised $44 million, much of it for a huge donor-recruitment program.
Maybe the U.S. should have stayed out of World War II. Sure Hitler killed millions, but no one ever turned up his weapons of mass destruction.
Congratulations to Insight Senior Editor Jamie Dettmer, whose investigative reports for this magazine on the Mexico-based Arellano-Felix drug cartel opened the door for Mexican cooperation in obtaining a fistful of indictments of the gang leaders just handed up in San Diego. Dettmer investigated the story at a time when Mexican reporters, prosecutors and police officers who attempted to do so were being murdered.
Conservative Rep. Phil Crane (R-Ill.) managed to add to the foreign-aid bill a resolution condemning the terrorist killings in Israel of 41 Americans since the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords where Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat renounced violence as part of the peace initiative.
The Crane amendment also requires the State Department to begin accounting for terrorist killings of U.S. citizens in its annual "Patterns of Global Terrorism."
So the Clintons won't be "reimbursed" by the taxpayers for the $3.5 million in legal fees they spent in resisting the Whitewater independent-counsel investigations. A three-judge appeals court said the charges involving the Clintons, Madison Guaranty and Whitewater "would have been similarly investigated and prosecuted by the Department of Justice." There were 24 related indictments and 16 convictions of Clinton cronies and he was, of course, disbarred and impeached. Clinton already had agreed not to seek reimbursement of legal fees for the Monica Lewinsky portions of the investigation as part of his punishment for alleged perjury and obstruction of justice. But the Clintons have exploited Bill's presidency for at least $37 million in fees and gratuities since leaving the White House.
Pentagon insider Dov Zakheim says the Iraq war will have cost nearly $58 billion by the end of September, with the meter running at $3.8 billion a month since January.
It's hard to imagine where they get these fantasies, but the New York Observer claims communications executive Barry Diller and writer Nora Ephron have been leading an effort to draft NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw, 61, as a presidential candidate for the Democratic Party. Right party, of course, but maybe he should be governor of Vermont first.
Washington Times Managing Editor Fran Coombs was in Havana in October where he noted the typewriter of New York Times correspondent Herbert Matthews has been given a place of honor in the Museum of the Cuban Revolution.
Conservative talker Laura Ingraham is moving her syndicated Laura Ingraham Show from its early evening slot to morning, 9 a.m. to noon, when her crisp and witty political and social commentary on breaking news will be up against the vacuous feel-good of liberal airheads.
Talk about em-barrassin'! Democratic candidate for president Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri claims to have done better than George W. Bush in grammar school at "plays well with others." This "dumber-than-thou" stuff pits Gephardt's B.S. from Northwestern and J.D. from Michigan against Bush's B.A. from Yale and M.B.A. from Harvard.
A copy of a top-secret document retrieved from an Iraqi intelligence archive and obtained by Insight outlines underground action to be initiated by Saddam Hussein's political and conventional forces in the event of a regime downfall. These included: (1) "Looting and burning of all state agencies connected with our directorates." ... (3) "Destroying power-generating stations." (4) "Destroying water installations." (5) "Mobilizing of dependable elements and bringing them into mosques." ... (8) "Cutting off internal and external communications."... (11) "Assassination of imams and preachers of mosques." And on and on in detailed description of just what has been happening.
Conservative insider David Keene notes that as soon as they struck down the Texas antisodomy law, citing foreign legal decisions and opinions, five U.S. Supreme Court justices flew off to consult on the new European Constitution. Keene especially is appalled that Associate Justice Stephen Breyer has been mooing about an imagined need to "harmonize" U.S. laws with those of Europe.
That ace of straddle politics, Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), has gone so far as to hire a new communications director named Matt Gobush.
Fans of Harry S Truman's alleged leadership in the Cold War will not be pleased to be reminded by Ann Coulter in her hot new book, Treason, that when Winston Churchill gave his Iron Curtain speech at Fulton, Mo., in 1946 suggesting an Anglo-American alliance to stop Moscow, the U.S. president snubbed Churchill, apologized to Stalin and offered to send the battleship USS Missouri to bring the mass murderer to the United States to deliver a rebuttal.
And, finally, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) says, "It wasn't yellowcake uranium than prompted the coalition to liberate Iraq. ... Given what we now know about the atrocities of the Hussein regime, none of the administration's critics can say with a straight fact that our efforts there were a mistake." Or if they do, says the colorful Texan, "Let 'em eat (yellow) cake."
Well THIS certainly sounds 'fair and balanced', don't you think?
And who knew this many people in DC could walk and chew gum?

Tonight, Ann told Drudge she would wait to see what topic sent the Libs into a frenzy, and then she would write a book about it. She has a lot of fodder from which to choose!
