BLOGGERS: Add Yourself to the Free Republic Blog Directory
vanity | 7/13/2003 | me

Posted on 07/13/2003 1:14:48 PM PDT by Political Numbers Guy

On Friday, I wrote a piece asking why Freepers don't get more involved in reading and writing blogs to expand Free Republic's influence in a growing medium that needs more conservative, pro-Bush voices. The response was phenomenal.

Click here to read the original thread, "Are Freepers Still Winning the Online War?"

One of the ideas that grew out of that thread was to start a Free Republic Blog Directory, or blogroll, as bloggers call it. From time to time, we will list all Freepers with blogs on threads like this to draw attention to their fine conservative writings. All Free Republic bloggers would then be encouraged to link to each of these sites -- and FreeRepublic.com, building a network and boosting traffic to all of these sites. More Links = More Readers visiting your site.

Here is the list so far of Freeper Bloggers. Click to visit their outstanding sites:

Cathryn Crawford
William McKinley
Regnum Crucis
Michael King
Federal Review
Hank's Blog
Imal

If you run a blog that's not on this list REPLY TO THIS THREAD to be added to the Free Republic Blogroll.

The purpose of this isn't just to promote existing conservative blogs that might get short shrift from many of the dominant libertarian blogs. It's to encourage prolific writers, commentators and other Freepers to start their own blogs so we can expand the conservative, pro-Bush blogosphere.

Visit http://www.blogspot.com to set up your own FREE blog and add yourself to the blogroll today.

OK. Now you're asking, I've got my own blog. How do I link to all these terrific sites? One way is to just copy the link list above directly into the links area in your template and add to it as you become aware of more conservative or Freeper blogs. Another way is to sign up for a free account at Blogrolling.com to manage your list of FR blogs.

Free Republic is the top destination for conservatives on the web, and blogs -- which are getting picked up more and more in the media -- are the next logical step in expanding Freepdom. In fact, you could call this Operation Expanding Freepdom.

Would you mind explaining exactly what a blog is? Yeah, I know it's short for web-log, but isn't it just a compilation of replies with no to/from information? Stream of internet consciousness, IOW?

Blogs, and the added value they bring to the table, are explained further in the original thread:

OK, I read your link, and still have no idea what a blog is and why they are better than the give-and-take which occurs here on FR.

A "blog" is sort of like one GIANT "vanity post" here on Free Republic, except that (in general) only the original poster of the thread/blog can add comments. :(
Therefore, the author of that blog must be REALLY talented to make it work, IMHO.

A "blog" is sort of like one GIANT "vanity post" here on Free Republic...
And, of course, a "vanity post" here is a thread which does NOT start with a new story already posted somewhere on the Internet, preferably from a "reliable" source.

Way Too Many Vanities (Updated)

Edited on 03/31/2003 3:26 PM PST by Admin Moderator. [history]

There have been way too many vanities lately. The news forum is being overrun with them. We have been spending a lot of time moving them to the General Interest ("Chat") forum. With the increased volume we have seen with the war starting, we have been missing mail and other moderator duties, such as zots. So, here's some guidelines for vanities. Of course, there are exceptions to these guidelines. We have seen some great vanities.

Vanities are never posted in breaking news. Exceptions will be from valid news sources where breaking news is happening immediately. Such as 'CNN just reported Baghdad has been overrun by coalition forces'. Or, 'Fox reports that WMD have been discovered in Saddam's palace by embedded reporter'.

Your one line vanites, for the most part can be posted as a comment on an existing thread. If you want to post a one line vanity, post it in the chat forum. One line vanities consist of but are not limited to, 'Did you just hear that guy on KASD?'. Or, 'Does anyone know where that thread is about that women who said something about chemical weapons'. They will be deleted unless they are posted in the chat forum.

Most emails are not valid sources of news. Who knows where they originated from. They will be deleted unless they are posted in the chat forum...

No offense intended, Political Numbers Guy.
Yous is a GOOD "vanity" post :o)

Here is a nice explaination of blogs and their implications to the news media.

from http://www.davidwarrenonline.com/SunSpec/Jun03/index83.shtml

A revolution is happening in journalism, right now; a revolution with huge political implications. Blogs are the cause. And the fall of Howell Raines this last week is like the first brick in a Berlin Wall. It will not stop tumbling.

Though made of words, a blog is a different thing, in kind, from printed articles in a newspaper or magazine, in which sources of information may be stated but must be taken by the reader on faith, unless the reader has the time, ability, and personal connexions to retrace them. And if he does, what he finds must then be taken on faith by his readers.

The blog may be updated by the minute or the hour, it remains accessible and searchable through its archives, but most crucially, it contains those Internet links. Through them, the bloggers are universally networked. They link each other's precise words, and -- comes the revolution -- are able to reference most of their sources almost instantaneously, in the original form.

The almost infinitely extendable electronic field of text, allows whatever space is necessary to delve into fine details. The "comments" that readers can append to each blog "post" provide a court of cross-examination, so the blogger himself is quickly exposed in any sharp practice. The bloggers also act as checks on one another, and cross-link when they contest each other's views and findings.

Example, bloggers have recently demolished one malicious misquotation after another of Bush administration officials, by leftwing newspaper reporters and columnists, simply by juxtaposing through links what the journalist tried to get away with, to the original transcripts.

In another breakthrough on Thursday, the Guardian, a British leftwing daily, found itself retracting two of its biggest recent stories. In the first it alleged Colin Powell and Jack Straw had had doubts about the evidence they gave before the war of Iraqi WMD, citing a meeting between them that -- had never taken place. In the second, it said Paul Wolfowitz had admitted the U.S. went into Iraq for its oil, quoting -- wilfully and dishonestly from a text retranslated through German. Bloggers had been all over both stories, and made the difference on the second.
