No, the WH still thinks the British Intelligence is accurate but the CIA has not confirmed to their satisfaction to meet the level it would be included in a presidential speech.

So what you are saying that what the President said in the State of Union speech MIGHT be accurate. MIGHT seems like an awful low standard for a Presidential address. Especially since our original intel on the subject was determined to be a forgery by the CIA months before the address. That would make me very suspicious of someone else's intel when they would not share the details of with us.

The statement was that the British intelligence learned that Iraq had been seeking to buy uranium in Africa. What's not to understand??We couldn't verify this to the CIA's satisfaction so they admit that with the high standard for a SOTU speech..it should not have been based on another country's intelligence (The Brits are standing by the intelligence)

Blitzer reads a portion of Wilson's NY Times piece and Rice says Wilson and everybody else needs to realize the president relies on a host of intelligence sources, not just one.

Excellent, as Wilson clearly acted as if his opinion was the end all and be all of the matter. Nevermind that the man has a bias the size of California.

Ack! As I went to post Blitzer says "quagmire"!

Our CIA also has several sources but not enough info to go on the record to verify as the British have done. Tenet refers to "fragments" of information that they have aside from the forged documents.

IMO, the CIA does have enough sources to verify the British report. However, Tenet chose to factor in State Departments claim that the report was false...and the rest is history.

So let's all hang our Freeping hats of the State Department intelligence.

I see you ignored that I informed you that Rice said this very morning (they've said it since Friday, actually) that the U.S. still has information that the uranium story is true.

Yes we have the "unsourced" British intel. We dont have any independent data and what we did have have was determined to be a forgery in Sept 2002.

'W' and the Brits secret service were simply connecting dots, and I thank them for it. The statement belonged in the speech. I want to know what we know and what we think we know. They needn't apologize for it.

The fact that this one correct statement has created this controversy points out the weakness of the libs case and the strenth of 'W''s administration. Talk about grasping at straws...jeez.

I thought I already agreed with that. I said I wasn't arguing that it should or should not have been included in the speech. The statement was not false or erroneous and the president and his advisors and the CIA now believe that the highest of standards should be applied to what is stated in a SOTU speech. I certainly have no quarrel with that.

That is a far cry from what the media has been portraying the situation to be---which was that the president "lied", when he did not.

You are correct - Africa, not Niger. Didn't I read somewhere on FR that the Niger false documents were from FRENCH sources?

I was so ticked off at the way Tony spent 15 minutes pounding on Condi that I didn't even watch the panel. I knew without Britt Juan and Mara would monopolize the whole thing. I got on the puter and shot off some e-mails to Snow and FNC in general. Then I just now started watching the Weekend News with Snow and the first report was this same bs. So I fired off another one but this one was just pure sarcasm. Sending facts that they ignore is useless.
I sent the following to Tony Snow

"I have some political spin and gossip that I want to spread and have breathlessly repeated every 15 minutes. Do I send it to you in a memo like the DNC sends you their talking points or should I send an anonymous e-mail and tell you I'm a "high ranking government official."? Please e-mail me back and let me know because what I have is juicy and all you gossip spreaders will wee wee in your pants when you hear it."

Do you reckon he will answer?

How often do you listen to Condi? She always has a quaver in her voice and I used to think it was because she was nervous. I've come to realize it's just the way she talks - at least on television.

Not very often. I just now saw her on Wolf Blitzer's show and she looks and sounds much calmer. For some reason, she looked rattled a bit at first on Tony Snow's show.

The CIA on January 17th appears to have said that the report WAS accurate. That according to chairmain Robert.

Was does not equal "MIGHT".

You keep saying that when it is not true. The CIA did not discard the story before the SOTU address, and to this very day they have information to support the story.

Why are you saying they have ruled the story not true?

And did you notice that Steph used the term "bogged down"? Rummy said "BOGGED DOWN?? We've been there TEN WEEKS!" Darn, wish I'd taped that particular interview.

Blitzer reads a portion of Wilson's NY Times piece and Rice says Wilson and everybody else needs to realize the president relies on a host of intelligence sources, not just one.

So the President factored in the riven State Department factor. The CIA did not.

Yet some Freepers here are so unobjective that they now say that the president must listen to riven State Department intelligence.
