WASHINGTON - As an adviser to leading Democratic politicians and an activist on women's issues, Joanne Symons helped Rep. Richard Gephardt negotiate the tricky political waters of switching positions on abortion in 1986 as he planned his first presidential campaign.

Some Leftist publication, I think Mother Jones, did a hit piece on him a few years ago, using his abortion flip-flop as an example of the most egregiously cold political calculation the writer had ever seen.

Based on what? Secular humanism? Socialism?

I don't think more than a handful of these... politicians - of any party - really believe in anything, other than glad-handing their way into, and around power.
