I would strongly recommend Keith's book "Out of America", which should be compulsory reading for all black Americans. Many in Africa, where I live, feel that the continual meddling in our continent's affairs by black Americans is doing us a great disservice. Their understanding of the way Africa works is far far inferior to that of the British colonialists. Africa does not need PC solutions, it needs common sense -- a quality many black Americans seem to lack when it comes to the continent of their roots.
Yes I am white and, to many, what I say may appear to be racist. But I live in Africa. I was born in Africa. And that gives me a much better perspective than black American activists who jet in once every couple of years and mostly only see the inside of Sheraton hotels.

Understatement. I'm in a completely different mood than I was 15 minutes ago, this article went right through me.

Totally agree, I am horrified, exhausted, and and ultimately left with a sense of hopelessness. The only saving grace is the feeling of being glad to be American, and living in a "western", modern, culture. Thank God for the White man, and a thank you to him, from an American Minority.

Too bad that Africa was deprived of another 200 years of colonialism. Compare with India, for instance, where the longer British rule accomplished bringing many western concepts and norms into the mainstream.

Now I really don't see a hope for it. Maybe a huge revival type movement? One can understand the attraction of Islam for a lot of these tribes and people.

I think it will get much worse.

Bush is a fool on this topic.

I haven't been there myself. But from what I see, the continent is a basket case with no hope for progressing. And the most ****ed up parts of the continent are those that were colonised by the Belgians and the French -- a coincidence or what?????

It seems the peace promoting Belgians have a particularly bad reputation.I think the Cold War had tyrants propped up and enriched if I recall.Both sides wanting "influence".

It was not that many hundred years ago that cheering crowds gathered at the Tower of London to watch traitors drawn and quartered, or that eternal infighting between Scottish Tribes (Clans) led to their defeat by the English.

It is but a blink in history and the Grace of God that we are not all living in an Africa of our own.

The author forget to include another charming habit in parts of Africa. The victim is beaten and old tires are placed atop the soon to be dead. Petrol is then used to start the tires ablaze and the victim is burned alive, rather slowly.

As one whom has worked in parts of Africa the Continent can be described in a few short words:

Corruption
Abject Fear
Brutality
Hatred
Death
Hoplessness
Life is without value
