B.C. court OK's gay marriage

Lifts moratorium

By CP

VANCOUVER -- Tom Graff choked on tears yesterday as he vowed to love and cherish Antony Porcino, his partner of 11 years, "as long as we both shall live."

The pair became the first gay couple to legally wed in British Columbia, barely an hour after the province's Court of Appeal lifted a one-year moratorium on same-sex marriages yesterday.

WAITS ON FEDS

The Appeal Court had earlier ruled in favour of same-sex marriages but imposed a ban until next July to permit the federal government to draft a new law redefining marriage.

But gay groups asked the court to revisit its moratorium after an Ontario Court of Appeal ruling opened the door to same-sex marriages in that province and Ottawa began drafting a new marriage law.

The three-member Appeal Court panel noted neither the B.C. nor federal attorneys general opposed lifting the ban.

"It is also apparent that any further delay in implementing the remedies will result in an unequal application of the law between Ontario and British Columbia," the decision said.

Graff, 58, and Porcino, 38, were in court to hear the decision.

"We're thrilled, very proud now, not just for us but for all the people that have been working on this for so long," Porcino said.

B.C. Attorney General Geoff Plant said it was a historic day, telling a local radio station the provincial government had taken no position because the definition of marriage is a federal responsibility.

2nd Canada court backs gay marriage

BC joins Ontario in recognizing unions; opponents may appeal

07/09/2003

Associated Press

TORONTO – British Columbia became the second Canadian province to allow same-sex marriage under a court ruling Tuesday.

The decision by the province's Court of Appeal further increased pressure on the Canadian government to follow through with plans to rewrite federal law that defines marriage as between man and woman.

An Ontario court issued a similar ruling last month, leading to more than 250 same-sex couples obtaining licenses to marry in Toronto.

British Columbia's Appeal Court earlier ruled in favor of same-sex marriages and gave the federal government a year to draft a new law redefining marriage. Gay rights groups then asked the court to reconsider the one-year delay after the Ontario ruling.

In its decision Tuesday, the three-member B.C. Appeal Court panel said it was "apparent that any further delay in implementing the remedies will result in an unequal application of the law between Ontario and British Columbia."

Religious and family groups opposed to same-sex marriage said they will ask Canada's Supreme Court to allow them to appeal the Ontario court ruling that legalized gay and lesbian weddings.

Angered by the government's plan to let the Ontario ruling stand and instead propose a new law permitting same-sex marriage, the groups said they would try to intervene.

"The federal government has abdicated its leadership role," said Derek Rogusky of Focus on the Family, a conservative lobby group. "This matter has far-reaching consequences nationwide, and the nation's highest court should be permitted to consider the fundamental issues."

Focus on the Family was joined by the Interfaith Coalition on Marriage, a collection of Roman Catholic, evangelical Protestant and Islamic organizations, in planning to seek intervener status in the case.

Prime Minister Jean Chretien has said his government is drafting a law that would legalize same-sex marriage while allowing churches to decide what ceremonies they sanction.

Aw Shucks....I'm all choked up!

I bet the divorce lawyers are jumping up and down with glee. A brand new source of revenue has just opened up for them.

The gay community may end up deciding this isn't so great after all. Now they will have to deal with getting "taken to the cleaners" when they get divorced and it may not feel so liberating when they are making alimony payments to all of their ex's.

I wonder if they got married so they could get a two for one deal on perms.

BTW, there is good kissing and bad kissing. That, my friends, is bad kissing.

Homosexuality is deviant sexual behavior and a mental illness.

Homosexuals: 1) subject their body parts to uses nature did not intend, such activities often presenting immediate risk to the participants; 2) are prone to greater suicide, depression and other mental disorders and deficiencies than the heterosexual population at large; 3) are prone to far greater sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS, than the (normal) heterosexual population; 4) molest young people (pedophilia) at a far greater rate than heterosexuals; 5) engage in degrading sexual promiscuity, oftentimes engaging in risky sex with many partners during the same event; 6) are engaged in aggressive and widespread efforts to indoctrinate our children by introducing the homosexual lifestyle using public schools as the primary indoctrination “vehicle” and likewise, through the movie/music/TV industry, with the dual goals of gaining school-age acceptance of homosexuality and encouraging sexual activity among children, especially same-sex experimentation; 7) view most everything through a mindset heavily biased in favor of the homosexual lifestyle and culture, which renders them mostly useless when asked to opine on matters that normal heterosexuals better resolve.

The mental deficiencies described herein applying to homosexuals shall not be confused with the deficiencies associated with the left wing democrat/socialist/marxist/ feminist/environmentalist minds, etc., which have their own distinct set of mental disorders.

This doesn't even touch on what the Bible has to say about homosexuality.

Since gayness isn't genetic, the rewards of homosexuality must far outweigh the cons you've enumerated or else there would be no homos.

Humans have and can be addicted or attached to myriad practices and habits that horrify people not so addicted/attached. Much is either cultural or due to childhood situations. Just because there are X number of people practicing same sex acts is no indication that therefore such acts are beneficial to them or society at large.

Being addicted to FR is viewed as a horror to commies and members of the lamestream media.

X number of people, including me, smoke cigars and drink single malt straight up. There's no societal benefit to that at all and I don't give a flying turd about it.

You find unhappy people sticking their noses into everyone else's business all the time and there's not much you can do about it - part of human nature.

Lots of people voted for Clinton, therefore he was a good choice???

A lot of very wealthy people got richer under Clinton. Ask them.
