Every single Type II diabetic I know has overaten their way into developing it. Many could control their diabetes through execise and proper nutrition and choose not to do so (they'd rather not change their behavior and rely on drugs). I don't know anyone who's overweight and eats right and exercises.

Oh I totally believe you here. 100 percent agreement. But they didn't develop diabetes because they overconsumed steak and asparagus and blueberries. These foods have very little effect on blood sugar, and the pancreas would not have exhausted itself responding to blood sugar spikes from these foods.

But we digress. How is making sugar the foundation of a diet for impaired glucose tolerance appropriate?

You should have met my mom.
She took 6 gm. or thyroid hormones per day.
She walked before it was popular to walk.
She lived on chicken and tomatoes to lose 25 lbs for a surgery.
She died at 250 pounds but was married in 1950 at 89 lbs. She had a goiter and it blew her thyroid gland.
You sound like a typical fat bigot.
If it was all calories in, calories out, I would be dead from the 8 months I lived on popcorn and diet coke and minored in dance in college.
My hair was falling out, my electrolytes went out of balance and I was fainting, but damn I was thin!
People who believe that everyone just needs to cut back on calories to lose weight is deluded.

I am Type II. When diagnosed 2 years ago, I weighed 185. Ideal for my height. I now weigh 225. I eat less carbs and sugar than I did before I was diagnosed. Due to arthritis I can exercise very little. Same as when I was diagnosed. My chemistry changed sometime in the last 2 years. I packed on 40 lbs for no apparent reason. I am also on Synthroid for thyroid problems.

I am 54 and have been on the thin side all of my life. Not any more. Some people are heavy due to their chemistry or makeup. I know now, this is true and not a excuse.

Well, let me introduce myself to you. I am a type II diabetic.

I was never real overweight, accept during one of my pregnancies.

I always excercised!!

I was an avid horseback rider( Eastern not Western), I took care of my own horses and tack, I enjoyed ice skating in the Winter or at an indoor rink for years, I am a former arobics addict and I loved hiking trips and camping.

I became a diabetic about 1986, according to old blood tests however, I was not diagnosted until 1993. My blood sugar was irregular all those years, but my doctor's just were not concerned. After all I was such an active person.

Well, here we are 10 years later and I follow a LOW CARBOHYDRATE diet but I also watch the fat in my foods.

I avoid sugar like it is the PLAGUE!!

I have problems with infections but heart is fine.

Just wanted you to know that I have several friends who are also type II and they are not fattys or hogs either.

I think the hidden sugar in the processed foods we have been consuming for years is making lots of folks fat and contributing to the epidemic of diabetics II.
