Within the next 24 hours the people of Iran are entering a major confrontation with their regime

Go Persians! I'll count on your reports of the battles. This is the time and place for all good Persians to stand up and be counted.

Like others, I remember 1979 bitterly. I can still see Iranians telecasted from Tehran sifting American ashes through their fingers and laughing after the disastrous helicopter attempt to rescue the US embassy hostages. But most Iranians alive today weren't even born then, so they can't be blamed.

The Iranians must free themselves, it will mean so much more to them, but we Americans should stand in respect for their efforts. Colin Powell and the State Dept. wouldn't agree, but they're an isolated breed, all by themselves.

State department spokesman Richard Boucher just came out with a statement "clarifying" Powells remarks of last week. He told reporters that the kinds of changes called for by Iranians demonstrating against their government "would be good for Iran and good for Iran's place in the world."

Speaking at the July 7 State Department press briefing in Washington, Boucher called on the Iranian authorities to listen to the demonstrators.

"[T]he Iranian people are calling for much more democracy and for real democracy and open democracy," he said. "So that remains the area where we express our support...."

He heard us!!!!!!

I just hope the Iranian people hear this soon.
They are just waking up in Iran.
They need to hear his "clarification."

Colin's really not so bad as a Secretary of State. I think the President uses him as a willing tool in a global game of "Good Cop-4 Bad Cops (Bush, Cheny, Rumsfeld, Rice)." But as a President? No way, you're absolutely right. Yeesh, our foreign policy would be about one step to the right of Jimmy Carter's!
