WASHINGTON - In an article headlined "The Middlest Middle-of-the-Road Democrat," Fortune Magazine highlighted Rep. Richard Gephardt's willingness to challenge his party's liberal traditions.

"With his Robert Redford good looks, telegenic personality and relative youth, Gephardt is the very picture of a New Democrat," the magazine gushed.

Ahhh...and the "favorite son" of the St. Louis newsrag gets his own little series right around Independence Day. How lovely.

A news release in August 1981 from Gephardt's Washington office captures the distance he has traveled since.

"President's position on Abortion, Busing, School Prayer Criticized," the headline said - in a release that reproached then-President Ronald Reagan for not doing enough to end abortion, to block school busing and to promote prayer in school.

And then, he met up with the Democrat Party in Washington DC. He was told, no doubt, that his pro-Morality positions would never get him anywhere in the leadership of the Party of Infanticide. So, his spine bent like the noodle it was...and he became an enemy of Decency.

That's a pity. I would have infinitely more respect for the Democrats if had at least SOME good pro-life supporters among their ranks. Being pro-life seems like the kiss of death for a Democrat.

The rats are becoming increasingly marginalized. They rely on the Union vote, the Black Vote, a decreasing number of Leftist liberals, and the semileagal.

Labor drove the Republican vote out of their ranks when Meaney was Commissar, I was one I know. It is getting hard to balance these groups with their often conflicting aims as Herr Gephardt is finding.

I'm glad I moved out of Lyin' Dick's district. If it wasn't for the totally corrupt Rat voting shennanigans in south St. Louis, he would have been booted out of Congress years ago. BTW, America isn't ready for a President with no eyebrows.

Gephardt, congressman, doesn't have the right stuff. If I'm not mistaken it's been 40 years (Kennedy) that someone from Congress came into office first from Congress. Also lately there has been a run of Governors from both parties (Carter, Reagan, Clinton, Bush) when there was a party changeover.

If the Democrats are serious it will be Dean or another governor. Congress critters are too tainted.

I agree. Good looks? He has no eyebrows and reminds me of an iguana.

"Being pro-life seems like the kiss of death for a Democrat."

Oh, it is. They treated the wonderful Gov. Casey of Pennsylvannia like dirt. He was a true pro-life liberal, or maybe even just a Compassionate Person of Common Sense, he showed excellent Catholic values. You might not agree with him on everything, but then again, you'd never know it, because his party preferred to keep him in the closet.

Pro-abortion repubs got nothing to complain about compared to the pro-life dems, whatever very few are left. Gov. Casey is gone to his eternal reward, and Raymond Flynn is the only other one I can think of.

The dem party is disintegrating because of behavior like this, they are no longer a political party, just a professional pandering operation in the quest for power.

that someone from Congress came into office first from Congress...

If you're speaking from the Congress straight to the Presidency, you're right. But what is even more rare is for a Representative (as opposed to a Senator) to go from the House to the White House. I think it was only done once: by Republican James Garfield. He was assassinated about six months into his term, I believe by a bureaucrat who wanted to suck more off the government's teat.

Don't forget that he actively encouraged illegal aliens to vote a few months back. He would minimize what border control we have if he gained the presidency.

He also recently said if he didn't like what the Supreme Court said he would go around them with executive orders. OTOH, I can't see how he'd be at odds with a court that finds a right to sodomy and discrimination against white boys, asians, and jews.

Excellent article. Mr. Gephart certainly has gone downhill over the years. The amazing thing is that the same story can be told again and again of various Dems once they hit the reality of national politics. Generally, they still talk conservative to the folks back home, to provide cover.

The Dem. party certainly is a slithering mess. God, it needs a flush out, very badly.
