Release insufficient: Hamas

THE radical Islamic movement Hamas said today that an agreement by the Israeli government paving the way for the release of some 350 Palestinian prisoners was "insufficient".

"We demand the liberation of all the detainees and in particular those from Hamas and we are not prepared to accept discrimination in this regard," senior Hamas official Ismail Hanyeh told AFP.

But the spokesman said that the move represented a "first step" as he confirmed that the release of "all those in detention" remained a condition of a ceasefire agreed by Hamas and three other major militant groups last weekend.

A senior official from Islamic Jihad, another signatory to the unilateral truce, also gave a negative response to the decision which he called a "Zionist manoeuvre" and accused the Israeli government of "playing with the hopes of families".

The Israeli cabinet agreed by 13 votes to eight a motion today authorising the releases on the basis of a list drawn up by the Shin Beth security service, a government source said.

The list had been drawn up at the request of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who is keen to make a goodwill gesture to his Palestinian counterpart Mahmud Abbas who made the releases a key demand at their joint meeting last Tuesday.

The cabinet laid down precise criteria which must be met for prisoners to be released and insisted that a final decision on their freedom would be made by an inter-ministerial commission.

This is just plain nuts! The IDF needs to institute a shoot to kill policy anytime they encounter a suspected terrorist...anytime at all. Perhaps some well placed micro transmitters can be placed in the scum through injection in the ruse of a physical exam. We could then trace their steps back into Syria and see with whom they meet. A bit futuristic but not beyond present capabilities, at least for short range tracking. May as well make the best of a bad situation.
